The Industrial Maintenance Technician is responsible for maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing various electrical and mechanical systems within a food processing facility. This role requires expertise in several skill areas, including electrical controls, fluid power, mechanical systems, welding, fabrication, and manufacturing processes. The technician will engage in medium to high-level troubleshooting and repairs while providing technical support across all operational phases. The work will vary in complexity, addressing a range of mechanical maintenance tasks.

Core Responsibilities

  • Receive and assess work orders/requests to determine necessary tools, equipment, time, manpower, parts, and supplies.
  • Respond to urgent calls equipped with essential tools and equipment.
  • Interpret blueprints, schematics (including electrical), wiring diagrams, and technical manuals.
  • Maintain accurate records and logs of activities.
  • Monitor equipment or machinery during operation to identify malfunctions.
  • Disassemble mechanical equipment, identify faulty or worn components, replace them, reassemble, and conduct tests.
  • Utilize specialized equipment to test major subsystems or components to pinpoint issues.
  • Fabricate replacement parts as needed, which may involve welding, cutting, or sheet metal work.
  • Conduct preventive maintenance on various mechanical systems and equipment, including the installation of new equipment/appliances and utilities (i.e., electrical, water, gas, or drain lines).
  • Install, troubleshoot, and maintain mechanical equipment, piping systems, and electrical controls/components in compliance with manufacturer specifications, local regulations, and safety policies.
  • Perform preventive and predictive maintenance schedules on mechanical equipment such as pumps, packaging, slicing equipment, and harvest/cutting machinery used in manufacturing.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in operating a variety of small hand tools and devices used in general mechanical maintenance operations.

Qualifications

To excel in this role, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The following requirements represent the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed:

  • High school diploma or GED with 1+ years of relevant experience and/or training in industrial mechanical maintenance or food manufacturing; or 4 years of direct experience in a similar environment.
  • Vocational Diploma, Technical Diploma, or associate degree from a technical maintenance or vocational school is preferred.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and interact productively with all levels of personnel and external contractors.
  • Capability to operate a forklift, genie lift, scissor lift, or other powered industrial trucks (PIT).
  • Comprehend and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to read and execute work orders, write daily reports, and interpret equipment manuals.

  • Noise levels in the work environment are typically moderate but can be loud in production areas.
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds.
  • Regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds using the buddy system or specialized lifting devices.
  • Specific vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Frequently required to stand, walk, use hands to handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and communicate effectively.
