This role specifically supports our partners at the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE), managing the critical technical functions that underpin public education in Minnesota, including funding disbursement and large-scale reporting of school performance data.

The Lead Java Web Application Engineer will play a pivotal role in the development of custom web-based applications for the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE). This position entails leading the design and execution of large-scale, complex computer systems, ensuring the optimal functionality of existing web applications, and directing the technical architecture of agency systems, business processes, and automation initiatives. As a Lead Engineer, you will mentor and guide advanced technical specialists on projects of significant scope and complexity.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate closely with senior management to analyze business processes and propose automation strategies that enhance operational efficiency.
  • Lead the design and implementation of system architecture, ensuring alignment with the agency's strategic objectives.
  • Oversee the development of web applications, utilizing best practices in coding and design.
  • Facilitate effective communication among team members and stakeholders to ensure mutual understanding and project success.

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must demonstrate a minimum of five (5) years of IT experience as a Full Stack Java Developer, focusing on the development of comprehensive object-oriented Java web applications, including analysis, design, implementation, build scripting, and unit testing.

Experience must include:

  • Proficiency with web application frameworks such as Spring Framework or Spring Boot.
  • Experience in Azure app development and migration, along with GitHub Actions.
  • Hands-on experience in user interface design using HTML3, CSS3, JavaScript, and React.
  • Expertise in SQL database management, including creation, modification, and querying.
  • Familiarity with database integration technologies such as JDBC and Hibernate.
  • Knowledge of source control systems like GitHub or Subversion.
  • Strong customer service skills, including active listening and problem-solving abilities.

A master's degree in Information Technology or a related field may substitute for three (3) years of experience, while a bachelor's degree may substitute for two (2) years, and an associate's degree may substitute for one (1) year.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Groovy and Grails.
  • Familiarity with cloud technologies and microservice development.
  • Extensive experience in web application performance analysis and optimization.
  • Ability to integrate third-party libraries into applications.
  • Experience with build tools such as ANT, Gradle, or Maven.
  • Leadership experience in project management and mentoring junior developers.
  • Advanced skills in using and configuring IDEs such as IntelliJ and Visual Studio.
