Job Description

esVolta seeks an exceptional Technical Director - Energy Storage to join our team and support the technology selection and readiness of utility-scale energy storage projects. This role will report directly to the Head of Engineering and be responsible for conducting comprehensive energy storage technology assessments, ensuring compliance, and developing optimal strategies for esVolta projects.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Lead technology readiness evaluations for integrated short and long-duration energy storage systems, collaborating with the Head of Engineering to develop implementation, testing, and qualification strategies and roadmaps.
  2. Conduct thorough technology selection, assurance, and risk assessments, considering key factors such as safety, bankability, insurability, health, degradation, lifecycle behavior, battery chemistry, thermal management, controls, charge/discharge strategies, and obsolescence.
  3. Analyze complex data and present findings in a clear, concise manner, facilitating effective communication of advanced technical concepts.
  4. Develop and refine technical RFP bidding and evaluation processes, as well as create tools to support these efforts.
  5. In collaboration with Development Engineering, assist in creating techno-economic analysis and reviews for specific technology applications.
  6. Work with the HSE Director to assess fire suppression and prevention technologies' suitability, risk levels, and recommendations.
  7. Evaluate BOP technology readiness, suitability, and risks for project pipeline assessment.
  8. Monitor and analyze technology performance, generating regular data-driven reports to inform lessons learned and enhance the technology selection and procurement process.
  9. Create and maintain technology SOW requirements (Scopes of Work) for integration into future projects' EPCA SOW Exhibits.
  10. Serve as the primary point of contact for TEI (Tax Equity Investment) / IE (Independent Engineer) technology-related due diligence.
  11. Support Project Management, Project Engineering, and Asset Management teams as needed during preconstruction, construction, and operations phases.
  12. Project Standard and Certification Compliance Assurance:
    1. Assist in PPA and GIA evaluations to ensure current technologies meet contractual performance requirements.

Quality Assurance

  1. Oversee technology suppliers' QA/QC compliance throughout the procurement process.
  2. Create supplier QA/QC standards and FAT SOWs for EPC companies and third-party inspection firms.

Safety

  1. Ensure designed and deployed technologies adhere to industry compliance standards (UL, NFPA).
  2. Collaborate in major incident analysis when required.
  3. Develop and assist in FMEA (Failure Modes and Effects Analysis) and HMA (Hazard Mitigation Analysis).

Skills and Qualifications

  1. Minimum 12 years of engineering experience, with at least 5 years in renewable energy/energy storage.
  2. Advanced degree in Electrical Engineering, physics, or electrochemistry; Professional Engineer Certification.
  3. Subject Matter Expertise in BESS-related standards (IBC, NFPA 855, CEC, CFC, IEEE, NEMA, NEC, OSHA, UL).
  4. Expert-level proficiency in battery technology for storage applications, battery systems, modules, subcomponents, PCS, and EMS.
  5. Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office and familiarity with MATLAB, Python, or other software modeling tools.
  6. Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively communicate complex ideas and navigate time-sensitive situations.
  7. Willingness to work remotely and occasional travel or relocation to project sites; up to 25% travel expected.

Compensation

The estimated salary range for this position is $150,000 - $175,000 annually, plus a bonus of 20-25%. Location flexibility allows for remote work with periodic office visits or working from company offices in Newport Beach.
