Job Title: Laborer I

Join the City of Overland Park team as a Laborer I and contribute to the maintenance and upkeep of our beautiful arboretum.

Job Summary:

The Laborer I is responsible for maintaining the appearance of the arboretum by patrolling and cleaning trails and grounds, as well as maintaining and repairing facilities. This role also involves mowing grass, trimming trees, and maintaining gardens, as well as assisting with customer service and emergency operations.

Responsibilities:
  • Patrol and clean buildings, trails, and grounds
  • Assist with the setup, operation, and teardown of events, exhibits, and rentals
  • Mow turf areas using riding mowers, push mowers, and string trimmers
  • Use blowers on sidewalks and other paved areas
  • Use proper horticultural and arboricultural techniques to plant, prune, fertilize, rototill, and add soil amendments to annuals, perennials, bulbs, shrubs, and trees
  • Maintain and repair facilities using appropriate tools
  • Maintain trails by mulching and keeping branches trimmed
  • Assist in maintaining prairie by planting food crops, controlling weeds, and conducting controlled burns
  • Follow proper procedures and guidelines to bring the arboretum into compliance with ADA standards
  • Maintain equipment and tools in proper working order
  • Assist with construction of additional facilities such as signs, small buildings, fences, etc.
  • Assist with customer service and provide general information to the public
  • Assist in ensuring a safe environment for visitors and the general public
  • Assist with emergency operations, including snow removal, as required
Requirements:
  • Basic education (general high school diploma or equivalent)
  • Possession of an appropriate, valid driver's license
  • Must maintain an insurable driving record
  • Six months experience in landscape/horticulture, operation of mowing equipment, hand and power tools, and motorized utility vehicles, or an equivalent level of experience
Working Conditions:

The Laborer I will work in a fast-paced environment with varying weather conditions. The employee must be able to travel and tour City facilities and parks in adverse conditions.

Benefits:

The City of Overland Park offers a competitive salary of $15.25 per hour and a benefits package that includes full-time benefits.
