ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
As a vital member of the hemodialysis healthcare team, you will ensure the delivery of safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients, working under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse. Your responsibilities will align with FMCNA policies, procedures, and training, adhering to regulations set by the corporation and relevant state and federal agencies.
KEY DUTIES INCLUDE:
Patient Education:
- Collaborate with healthcare professionals to provide tailored education to patients regarding adequacy measures, including Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), and Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM).
Patient Care:
- Greet assigned patients and assess their well-being since their last treatment.
- Check vascular access for functionality.
- Record necessary pre and post-treatment vital signs and weight.
- Conduct vascular access evaluations and perform cannulation.
- Administer Heparin as permitted by state law.
- Initiate dialysis treatment following prescribed orders, including blood flow and dialysate flow rates.
- Monitor patients during treatment and address any intradialytic issues as directed by physician orders.
- Document vital signs and treatment parameters accurately on the Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet.
- Report significant changes in patient conditions to the supervising nurse.
- Perform safety checks on machines and document any unusual findings.
- Ensure all laboratory tests are conducted and specimens are prepared for collection.
Maintenance and Technical Duties:
- Maintain a clean and safe working environment, ensuring all equipment is disinfected between treatments.
- Conduct necessary preparations for dialysis treatment and document actions taken.
- Perform required alarm testing on dialysis machines.
- Handle blood spills immediately with appropriate disinfectants.
Documentation and Record Keeping:
- Participate in Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) activities and document all treatment data accurately.
- Prepare initial patient charts and lab requisitions as needed.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- This role requires physical stamina, including heavy lifting and moving patients, as well as prolonged periods of standing.
- Employees must pass a color blindness test as part of employment conditions.
- The work environment is typical of a healthcare facility, with exposure to infectious materials.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- A High School diploma or G.E.D. is required.
- Must meet state or national certification requirements as mandated by the Center for Medicaid/Medicare Services (CMS).
EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:
- A minimum of two years of patient care experience in a healthcare setting is preferred.
- Continued employment is contingent upon successful completion of the FMCNA dialysis training program and CPR certification.
