As a Clinical Specimen Technician, your key responsibilities will encompass:

  • Collecting blood samples, processing specimens, and executing reference laboratory procedures in laboratory diagnostics.
  • Preparing samples for analysis and managing specimens within the laboratory information management system.
  • Preparing and dispatching reference laboratory specimens while addressing any pending specimens and transport issues.
  • Monitoring test ordering trends and requisitions to ensure adherence to outpatient laboratory testing protocols.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Performing phlebotomy for inpatient, outpatient, and emergency room settings.
  • Collecting and processing urine drug tests.
  • Conducting fingerstick glucose assessments.
  • Entering orders and occasionally handling courier duties.

In this role, you will assist in obtaining, preparing, and processing specimens for analysis in our clinical laboratories. Your duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Preparing samples for testing and managing specimens in the laboratory information system.
  • Shipping reference laboratory specimens and resolving any pending issues.
  • Monitoring test ordering patterns to ensure compliance with laboratory testing standards.

Education Requirements:

High School Diploma or equivalent is required. A year of college or equivalent experience is preferred.

Certifications:

American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.

Work Experience:

A minimum of six months of experience in phlebotomy and laboratory processing is preferred.

Physical and Mental Demands:

This position requires mobility, with the ability to lift up to 10 pounds regularly and occasionally carry items weighing up to 20 pounds. The role involves sitting for short periods, filing, moving records, and performing venipuncture, which necessitates bending and dexterity.

Additionally, the ability to work in a fast-paced environment, prioritize multiple tasks, and collaborate effectively with team members is essential.

Confidentiality:

Employees will have access to medical records for the purpose of charting and correcting laboratory results, with access limited to what is necessary for laboratory testing requests.

Personal Protective Equipment:

Adherence to Standard Precautions and the use of personal protective equipment is mandatory due to potential exposure to biohazardous materials during specimen collection and processing.
