Job Summary

The University of New Mexico is seeking a highly qualified Radiation Safety Officer to join our faculty as a key member of the Department of Radiology. This is an exceptional opportunity for a seasoned professional to lead our radiation safety program and contribute to the advancement of medical physics and health physics research.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop, implement, and manage the radiation safety program for the University of New Mexico, ensuring compliance with University, state, and federal regulations.
  • Provide technical expertise and guidance to faculty, staff, and students on radiation safety practices and procedures.
  • Oversee the use of radioactive materials, radiation laboratory surveys, and radioactive waste management programs.
  • Manage the radiation safety training program and personnel dosimetry program to ensure safe handling of radiation.
  • Supervise personnel, including work allocation, training, promotion, and performance evaluation.
  • Participate in the development and management of annual operating budgets for the operating unit.
Requirements
  • Master's degree in Health or Medical Physics or related technical field.
  • At least 2 years of experience as an RSO or ARSO on a broad scope license.
  • Meet all NRC training and experience requirements for RSO as indicated in NUREG 1556 volume 9 and volume 11.
Preferred Qualifications
  • PhD in Health or Medical Physics or related technical field.
  • Board certified by NRC-recognized specialty board.
  • 5 years of experience as an RSO or ARSO on a broad scope license.
  • Experience teaching health physics, radiation safety, or related topics to various learners.
