As a Structural Engineer, you will play a vital role in designing and detailing structures and bridges for various projects, including new constructions and rehabilitations.

This position is located in our Richmond District office, an area rich in natural beauty, including the James River and numerous trails, historical landmarks, and cultural activities, promoting a healthy work-life balance. The Richmond District oversees approximately 18,000 miles of roadway, making it the largest district in the state.

Key Duties Include:

  • Designing and detailing structures and bridges in compliance with AASHTO specifications.
  • Conducting checks on statically determinate and indeterminate structures to ensure they meet alignment, dimension, strength, and economic criteria.
  • Providing construction support and guidance during the construction and maintenance phases of projects.
  • Managing assigned projects to ensure timely and accurate completion.
  • Reviewing plans prepared by others for accuracy and completeness.
  • Preparing effective preliminary and final designs for various projects.
  • Conducting inspections of existing structures to assess conditions and determine necessary repairs.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants should possess a solid understanding of civil engineering principles, particularly in structural engineering, including knowledge of materials strength, statics, and structural analysis. Familiarity with structural steel design, reinforced and pre-stressed concrete design, and soil mechanics is essential. Additionally, candidates should be able to estimate material quantities and costs, interpret construction plans, and communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Additional Considerations

A combination of education, training, or experience in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering is preferred. Candidates with Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) licensure are highly desirable. Proficiency in AASHTO's Load Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) specifications is also advantageous.
