General Summary/Purpose

The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) in ambulatory practice areas functions as a vital member of the interdisciplinary healthcare team. The CMA is responsible for direct patient care and clinic operations, including maintaining a safe and organized environment. They work collaboratively with other clinicians to ensure a positive patient experience while providing high-quality care.

The CMA reports to the Clinic Manager, who oversees administrative supervision, staff orientation, competency assessments, and adherence to clinic policies and procedures. CMAs may be assigned to different JHU Dermatology clinics based on their skills and competence.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates proficiency in all patient care skills, including effective written and verbal communication, time management, and organizational abilities.
  • Operates electronic monitoring equipment, utilizes computer systems for data input and retrieval, and effectively gathers and summarizes clinical information.
  • Communicates clearly and professionally with patients, families, physicians, and other healthcare team members to foster optimal outpatient care.
  • Proficiently uses general computer applications and physiological monitoring equipment, including vital signs machines, cardiac monitors, ECG devices, point-of-care equipment, sterilization equipment, scopes, and emergency equipment.
  • Identifies potential changes in patient condition and promptly notifies the appropriate personnel. Demonstrates problem-solving skills and critical thinking during patient care activities.
  • Recommends improvements to enhance patient safety and quality outcomes.
  • Under the direction of the Clinic Manager, takes appropriate clinical actions to achieve positive patient outcomes for patients, visitors, and staff.
  • Prioritizes daily tasks and assignments independently while adhering to established policies and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory)

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent is required.
  • Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant training program is mandatory.
  • Successful completion of CMA certification with credentials such as RMA, NCMA, NRCMA, CCMA, or CMAA prior to hire.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience as a CMA, preferably in dermatology.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Familiarity with medical terminology.
  • Sound documentation skills.
  • Knowledge of basic clinical procedures, including wound care, phlebotomy, and administration of injections.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
