Job Title: Refrigeration Mechanic and Equipment Technician

Portsmouth Public Schools is seeking a skilled Refrigeration Mechanic and Equipment Technician to join our team. As a key member of our facilities department, you will be responsible for the maintenance and repair of commercial food service equipment, ensuring the safe and efficient operation of our kitchens.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform routine maintenance and repairs on refrigeration equipment, including troubleshooting and troubleshooting electrical and mechanical issues.
  • Install, adjust, and replace electric and electronic thermostats, as well as detect and repair leaks in pipes and valves.
  • Operate tools and equipment associated with this trade, including a school district vehicle, to and from work locations.
  • Coordinate work with other crews from various shops as required, and determine job requirements by reading and interpreting schematics, plans, specifications, and drawings.
  • Estimate and procure materials, supplies, and equipment from vendors per PPS policies and procedures.
Requirements:
  • Thorough knowledge of the equipment, materials, methods, practices, and tools used in the food service equipment trade, as well as electrical, natural gas, and liquid propane regulations and codes.
  • Ability to troubleshoot, test, repair, calibrate, maintain, or modify heating, cooking, cooling, and sanitizing food systems and equipment.
  • Ability to work from sketches, drawings, plans, or specifications, and follow oral and written instructions accurately.
  • Ability to supervise the work of others, establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, and perform related work as required.
Education and Experience:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school supplemented by completion of appropriate apprenticeship food service equipment training, or considerable experience in refrigeration, plumbing, or related trade. CFC Certification is required.

Special Requirements:

Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia, and possession of or ability to acquire appropriate license(s), certificate(s), and/or endorsement(s) for the position as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia and School Board.
