Position Overview

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking dedicated Wildlife Research Technicians to assist in the capture, sampling, and marking of various animal species. This role involves the administration of anesthesia to facilitate the collection of biological samples for SARS-CoV-2 testing, as well as serum samples to assess prior exposure to the virus. Technicians will gain hands-on experience with diverse trapping methods, animal handling, and marking techniques.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct fieldwork in a variety of outdoor environments, requiring physical stamina and adaptability.
  • Safely handle and anesthetize wildlife for sampling purposes.
  • Collect and record data meticulously using electronic spreadsheets.
  • Maintain and clean trapping equipment and organize field supplies.
  • Work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, to meet project needs.

Working Conditions
Fieldwork is seasonal, typically spanning from spring to fall, and involves long hours in physically demanding conditions. Technicians must be prepared to navigate uneven terrain, carry equipment over short distances, and work in varying weather conditions.

Required Qualifications
  • Ability to endure challenging outdoor conditions.
  • Strong commitment to wildlife conservation and research.
  • Physical fitness to traverse rugged landscapes.
  • Attention to detail in data collection and record-keeping.
  • Capability to adhere to established field protocols.
  • Experience working both independently and collaboratively.
  • Previous wildlife handling experience is preferred.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with mesocarnivore handling.
  • Enjoyment of outdoor activities and hiking.
  • Valid U.S. driver's license.
