Job Overview

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is seeking an Environmental Compliance Specialist to join the Field Services and Compliance Bureau. This role is essential in advancing the DNR's mission to preserve and enhance Iowa's natural resources by offering compliance support and enforcement across the southwest region of Iowa.

Key Responsibilities

As an Environmental Compliance Specialist, your duties will include:

1. Conducting thorough on-site evaluations of regulated facilities, such as:
- Animal feeding operations
- Public water systems
- Wastewater treatment facilities
- Air pollution sources and control systems
- Stormwater permitted sites
- Solid waste disposal locations
- Underground storage tank facilities

2. Gaining proficiency in state regulations, scientific principles, and environmental sampling techniques, as well as interpreting scientific data.

3. Responding to emergency incidents and addressing complaints as they arise.

4. Assisting regulated entities in achieving compliance with environmental laws and regulations.

Essential Skills

To succeed in this position, candidates must possess:

- A working knowledge of DNR environmental regulatory programs, policies, and procedures.
- Proficiency in using computer software at a moderate to advanced level.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills to convey technical information and regulatory requirements effectively.
- The ability to work outdoors and perform physically demanding tasks, including navigating rough terrain and lifting up to 25 pounds.
- A valid driver's license and the capability to travel frequently, including occasional overnight stays.
