As a leading national laboratory for the Department of Energy's Nuclear Energy program, INL plays a pivotal role in advancing nuclear research, development, and demonstration capabilities essential for nuclear innovation. The Materials and Fuels Complex (MFC) offers a unique environment for conducting comprehensive research and development on nuclear fuels, encompassing everything from fuel creation to post-irradiation analysis.
Key Responsibilities:
Your role will involve supporting research activities focused on the post-irradiation examination of various irradiated nuclear fuels. You will be responsible for the operation and upkeep of multiple electron microscopes, requiring expertise in Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) or Focused Ion Beam/Scanning Electron Microscopy (FIB/SEM) and associated analytical techniques. Handling highly radioactive materials will be part of your duties, along with mastering techniques to manage radiation exposure. Additionally, you will contribute to the development of innovative sample preparation methods and examination strategies for novel materials and instruments. Your responsibilities will also include conducting sample analyses and providing oversight to technical principal investigators, as well as compiling and interpreting data for technical reports.
- Engage in ongoing research and development activities for assigned nuclear facilities.
- Operate electron and focused ion beam instruments to fulfill PIE project requirements.
- Maintain proficiency in the operation and maintenance of scientific instruments and pursue professional development opportunities.
- Analyze and evaluate experimental data related to various fuel and cladding concepts.
- Organize and streamline instrument usage to ensure efficient project execution.
- Collaborate with fellow PIE scientists and modeling experts to enhance the understanding and application of PIE experiments.
- Work alongside program leadership and industry partners to evaluate nuclear fuel performance through post-irradiation examinations.
- Contribute to peer reviews of work conducted by colleagues within or outside the PIE department.
- Stay informed about relevant scientific literature.
- Establish partnerships with universities domestically and internationally to support future PIE initiatives.
- Provide mentorship to junior scientists, technicians, or post-doctoral staff.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant engineering or scientific discipline from an accredited institution.
- Experience relevant to the position level.
- This role requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "L" clearance, necessitating U.S. Citizenship.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with remote systems and hot-cell operations.
- The salary range for this position is Level 440 ($75,496). Compensation decisions are based on education, relevant experience, and other credentials.
