At Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston, we are committed to empowering individuals and families to lead healthy, successful, and productive lives. As a Serve Houston AmeriCorps Member, you will play a vital role in our mission to promote healthy, equitable futures for all.

Program Overview

Our Serve Houston program deploys teams of five AmeriCorps Members to project sites across Houston to provide direct service to community members. Members engage vulnerable populations in living healthier lives by providing outreach, training, and hands-on activities on nutrition, wellness practices, social and physical fitness, and other activities to directly benefit our community's health and wellbeing.

Eligibility Requirements
  • Be a citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States.
  • Pass National Service Criminal History background checks.
  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Be a current student, recent graduate, gap year student, or college aspirational student.
  • Have a valid driver's license or photo ID.
  • Be willing and ready to serve in person at your assigned project site.
  • Flexibility and willingness to serve your community.
  • Must be able to serve up to 20 hours per week.
  • Must have no competing commitments.
  • Be able to convey a meaningful connection to the Greater Houston community.
  • Be willing to comply with the COVID-19 protocol and vaccination requirements.
Project Sites

We have ten nonprofit project sites in the Houston area where you will serve. These sites include:

  • Meals on Wheels: Providing home-delivered meals to homebound seniors and disabled adults.
  • Refugee Services: Resettling legal refugees fleeing their homeland in fear of political, social, or religious persecution.
  • Santa Maria Hostel: Empowering women and their families to lead healthy, successful, and productive lives.
  • The Tejano Center: Developing education, social, health, and community institutions that empower families to transform their lives.
  • Avondale House: Providing individuals with autism the resources, education, and training to develop to their fullest potential.
  • L.I.F.E. Houston: Providing emergency nourishment for hungry babies and education about proper infant nutrition to families in need.
  • Houston Food Bank: Distributing food and other essentials to those in need through a network of community partners.
  • Houston ToolBank: Providing fellow not-for-profit organizations with year-round access to an inventory of tools for use in volunteer projects and facility and environmental maintenance.
  • Kids' Meals: Helping to end childhood hunger in Houston by delivering free healthy meals to the doorsteps of Houston's hungriest preschool-aged children.
  • Precinct2gether: Supporting the residents of Harris County Precinct 2 through multi-generational programs that engage, educate, and empower our residents.
Program Incentives
  • A living allowance totaling $4,500 over the program term is to be distributed in bi-weekly increments.
  • Segal AmeriCorps education award of $1,718.25 upon successful completion of service term (450 service hours).
