Job Overview

As a Lactation Consultant at TriHealth, you will provide expert guidance and support to breastfeeding families, nursing staff, midwives, and physicians. Your role will be to promote optimal breastfeeding outcomes and provide education on lactation best practices.

Responsibilities
  • Assess and intervene in situations that may jeopardize or compromise newborns and postpartum patients, including breast management, emotional upsets, abnormal feeding, and signs of dehydration.
  • Provide breastfeeding education to patients experiencing difficulty and serve as a support service to staff.
  • Plan and implement teaching sessions on anatomy and physiology of breast, milk transfer, effects of toxins and medications on human milk composition, normal lactation, infant growth and development, breastfeeding evaluation, and signs of dehydration.
  • Promote outpatient lactation services and products, assess patients for pumping needs, and encourage timely decision-making to prevent disappointment.
  • Perform initial and ongoing assessments of research clients, implement care directed towards optimal outcomes, and plan care based on assessment, standards of care, optimal outcomes, and protocol requirements.
  • Demonstrate utilization of evidence-based practices in breastfeeding and professional practice, work as a team, and develop education materials for patients, nursing, and medical professionals.
Requirements
  • Graduate of an approved technical, professional, or vocational program.
  • Equivalent experience accepted in lieu of degree.
  • Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS) certification.
  • International Board Certified Lactation Consultant exam within 18 months of hire.
  • Completion of mother/infant unit orientation.
