Position OverviewThis role presents a contract opportunity with the possibility of transitioning to a permanent position.

Role Summary:
  • The primary responsibility of a blood collection specialist is to support various assigned tasks, provide troubleshooting assistance, facilitate training, and recommend workflow improvements.
  • Experience in performing blood draws, accurately labeling specimens, centrifuging samples, maintaining records, and ensuring decontamination, as well as updating patient information.
  • Responsible for the collection and proper storage of specimens in accordance with established protocols.
  • Clearly and courteously explain the venipuncture process (blood drawing) and/or other specimen collection methods (e.g., urine or fecal) as necessary.
  • Demonstrate techniques using both straight and butterfly needles.
  • Fully comprehend all physician orders.
  • Ensure laboratory requisition forms are matched with specimen tubes, and label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as dictated by test orders.
  • Verify all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.
  • Package specimens appropriately for transport.
  • Store specimen samples at required temperatures, place samples in suitable collection containers/tubes, label accurately, and adhere to specific protocols necessary for transport to maintain specimen integrity.
  • Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
  • Participate in annual departmental training sessions.
  • Respond to telephone inquiries and read laboratory results to address questions.
Qualifications:
  • Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, as required in certain states.
  • A minimum of 6 months of experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital environment.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • High School Diploma or GED is required.
  • At least 2 years of relevant experience.
  • COVID vaccination is mandatory.
