Administrative Duties
Oversee the operations of the laboratory for the designated section and/or shift.
Ensure adherence to all personnel policies and procedures.
Assist in setting departmental goals and objectives.
Collaborate with related departments to establish and implement policies and procedures.
Conduct interviews, hire, discipline, and terminate staff as necessary.
Prepare and manage performance evaluations.
Manage work schedules to ensure sufficient staffing for workflow completion.
Authorize overtime as required.
Compile various reports for management and committees as needed.
Assume additional administrative responsibilities as directed by the site manager.
Technical Operations
Serve as a technical expert for laboratory instrumentation.
Assess new procedures and instruments for potential implementation.
Supervise the technical performance of the section to ensure accuracy and optimal turnaround times.
Generate and report workload statistics to the site manager.
Report quality control and proficiency testing issues as necessary.
Ensure compliance with standard operating procedures (SOP).
Oversee result reviews and resolve associated issues.
Respond to inquiries outside of regular hours.
Ensure technical manuals meet regulatory compliance standards.
Perform testing duties as required.
Cover any unfilled shifts.
Budget Management
Assist in the preparation of departmental budgets, including salaries, supplies, and services.
Monitor and justify monthly budget variances.
Identify cost-saving opportunities within the section.
Recommend and justify capital expenditures, including new or replacement instruments.
Recognize and communicate potential revenue opportunities.
Conduct cost analyses for new or existing tests as needed.
Inventory Control
Oversee the procurement of laboratory supplies.
Implement and maintain an inventory control system to minimize costs and enhance productivity.
Seek cost-effective purchasing methods for supplies.
Evaluate new equipment purchases as directed by management.
Communication
Participate in hospital-wide committees and staff meetings as scheduled.
Communicate laboratory and site-related issues to management.
Chair regular staff meetings.
Promote shared values and governance throughout the organization.
Initiate and respond to incident reports, communicating findings to management.
Engage with vendors and technical representatives regarding operational needs.
Collaborate with other laboratory management personnel.
Competency Testing
Assist in developing protocols to meet regulatory requirements.
Work with coordinators and management to ensure compliance.
Provide remediation as necessary.
Participate in required training sessions.
Regulatory Compliance
Monitor laboratory compliance with regulatory agencies.
Coordinate self-inspections and site inspections with management.
Ensure all quality assurance and quality control logs are maintained as required.
Safety Standards
Ensure staff compliance with safety regulations and policies.
Maintain a safe working environment in accordance with hospital policies.
Demonstrate knowledge of safety procedures, including the handling of hazardous materials.
Complete mandatory annual training programs relevant to the section.
QualificationsEducation and Training:
Must meet current CAP requirements for a laboratory supervisor.
Bachelor's degree in medical technology or a related field with 5+ years of experience in high-complexity testing in a CLIA/CAP environment; ASCP certification or equivalent required.
Experience and Skills:
Minimum of three years of clinical laboratory experience.
Two years of supervisory experience in a laboratory setting.
Demonstrated experience in a clinical laboratory or healthcare environment with a solid understanding of laboratory operations and regulatory compliance.
In-depth knowledge of clinical laboratory principles, methodologies, and devices.
Familiarity with relevant regulatory guidelines (e.g., CLIA, CAP) and accreditation processes.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot technical issues effectively.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for collaboration with various stakeholders.
Detail-oriented with a commitment to accuracy and quality in laboratory practices.
Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Proficient in laboratory information systems and data management tools.
