Overview

The U.S. Army requires Medical Laboratory Specialists to conduct tests on patient tissue, blood, and body fluids.

Job Responsibilities
  • Perform complex laboratory procedures in hematology, immunohematology, clinical chemistry, serology, bacteriology, parasitology, and urinalysis.
  • Collect blood specimens by venipuncture and capillary puncture, adhering to strict protocols to ensure sample integrity.
  • Pack, unpack, inspect, store, and distribute blood and blood products with utmost care.
  • Maintain and assemble laboratory equipment, ensuring optimal performance and compliance with regulations.
Training and Education

As a Medical Laboratory Specialist, you'll undergo 10 weeks of Basic Combat Training and 52 weeks and two days of Advanced Individual Training at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. You'll learn essential skills, including:

  • Medical laboratory procedures and protocols.
  • Study of human parasites and diseases, emphasizing prevention and treatment strategies.
  • Laboratory administration, record-keeping, and quality control measures.
  • Chemistry and biology principles applied to medical laboratory settings.
  • Detection and analysis techniques for various bodily fluids and tissues.
