Position SummaryThe Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad is in search of a dedicated Train Dispatcher. This pivotal role within our operations department is responsible for the safe and efficient dispatching of trains and on-track equipment. Dispatchers are tasked with issuing Authorities to occupy the Main Track, ensuring compliance with all operational protocols.
Successful candidates will undergo comprehensive training and testing on D&SNGRR Operating, Safety, Airbrake & Train Handling, and Timetable regulations. A solid understanding of the railroad's physical characteristics is essential. While two years of experience in a similar operational role is preferred, candidates demonstrating a strong capacity to learn quickly may also be considered.
Key Responsibilities- Complete training and assessments on D&SNGRR operational protocols.
- Ensure punctuality and readiness for duty with all required items.
- Adhere to Federal Railroad Administration Hours of Service regulations.
- Utilize the railroad radio communication system effectively.
- Publish and maintain Track Bulletins.
- Issue Main Track Authority to various on-track entities, facilitating safe operations.
- Maintain accurate records including Track Authorities, Time Slips, and Delay Reports.
- Communicate operational information to relevant parties.
- Act as a liaison between departments and field crews.
- Provide regular updates to management regarding operational delays or unusual situations.
- Dispatch emergency services as required.
- Compile and publish Daily Reports summarizing railroad activities.
- Handle sensitive information with discretion.
- Schedule relief crews and update operational schedules as needed.
- Monitor the inventory and serviceability of rolling stock.
- Facilitate communication between the Car Department and Operating Crews.
- Maintain qualifications for other Operating Department roles as necessary.
- Oversee maintenance of the Dispatcher's Access Database.
- Perform additional clerical duties as required.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, Access).
- Strong communication skills.
- Experience with heavy equipment is advantageous but not mandatory.
- Familiarity with railroad operations is preferred.
- Ability to demonstrate sound judgment and attention to detail.
- Capability to manage high-pressure situations calmly.
- Team-oriented with a focus on collaboration.
- Must pass a physical capabilities evaluation and comply with drug and alcohol policies.
- Adhere to all personal protective equipment requirements.
- Work shifts lasting up to 12 hours during peak seasons and 8 hours during off-peak seasons, including weekends and holidays.
- Operate in an office environment while utilizing radio communication systems.
- Handle sensitive information appropriately.
- Engage in occasional lifting of materials weighing up to 75 lbs.
- Navigate safely within a railroad yard and industrial setting.
