Position Overview: The Vehicle Maintenance Specialist plays a crucial role in upholding the Museum's mission by ensuring the proper upkeep and safety of all vehicles, utility equipment, trains, and other machinery.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Efficiently addresses facility requests as directed by the supervisor.
  • Coordinates repair activities with the supervisor and end users.
  • Maintains and repairs train engines, coaches, and tracks.
  • Conducts routine mechanical and preventive maintenance and suggests enhancements to maintenance procedures.
  • Performs scheduled and emergency maintenance on vehicles.
  • Diagnoses issues, adjusts, repairs, and overhauls various vehicular systems, including engines, transmissions, brakes, and electrical components.
  • Maintains and repairs additional mechanical equipment such as mowers, tractors, and generators.
  • Orders necessary parts and supplies.
  • Keeps accurate computerized and manual records of all maintenance activities.
  • Engages with customers and vendors as required.
  • Recommends outsourcing for specific repairs when necessary.
  • Executes welding repairs as needed.
  • Assists with other assigned facilities projects or tasks.
Compensation: $27.00-$34.00/hour

Position Requirements:
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience as a vehicular mechanic.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Familiarity with standard materials, tools, and techniques related to automotive service and repair.
  • Physical capability to perform job duties, including lifting up to 75 lbs, walking, and manual dexterity.
Skill Qualifications:
  • Aptitude: Strong mechanical skills with expertise in diagnostics and repairs.
  • Complexity: Handles assignments requiring significant judgment and initiative, understanding the implications of work and making informed recommendations.
  • Supervision: Works independently, prioritizing daily tasks and determining methods for new assignments, while potentially guiding other non-exempt staff.
  • Interaction: Communicates effectively within the Facilities team and interacts positively with staff and guests.
  • Experience/Education: Typically requires at least 5 years of relevant experience; a high school diploma or GED is mandatory, with trade school or technical degree preferred.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Certification from the National Institute for Auto Service Excellence (ASE).
  • Proficiency in welding.
