Job Summary

This position is responsible for providing advanced life support care at the scene of an accident or illness and during transport under the direction of the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) protocols as approved by the EMS medical director and/or online medical control. The Paramedic will also provide basic and advanced life support care at the hospital under the direction of the registered nurse or provider.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Current licensure as a Paramedic by the Indiana Department of Homeland Security, Emergency Medical Service Commission.
  • Possess a valid driver's license and a minimum of three years of satisfactory driving performance.
  • Current CPR and ACLS certification. Other advanced life support may be required by unit/department specialty according to patient care policies.
Preferred Qualifications
  • PALS and PHTLS certification. Must obtain within the first year of employment and maintain.
  • One year healthcare experience.
Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of healthcare policies and governmental regulations pertinent to the Ambulance Department.
  • Sufficient knowledge to observe and report changes in patient condition.
  • Excellent communication skills to effectively and tactfully communicate with patients and their families and guests, co-workers, managers, Hospital Administrators, providers, consultants, business associates, and regulatory agencies.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to carry out duties in a professional manner, as well as the ability to work well under stress.
  • Ability to problem solve, multi-task in a fast-paced setting, and work well in a team environment.
  • Developed computer skills and the ability to learn and proficiently perform patient care applications, e-charting, email, and other standard applications related to the department operations and job function.
  • Strong customer service skills, with special emphasis on patient-centered care.
  • Ability to manage multiple issues simultaneously and appropriately prioritize based on patient needs.
  • Basic working understanding of concepts of infection control principles to prevent the spread of infection to patients, self, and others.
  • Ability to react appropriately in any environment or situation.
  • General awareness and understanding of legal implications of patient care activities and self-performance while performing job duties.
  • Ability to be discreet and protect the integrity of any confidential matter or information encountered during the performance of job duties.
Working Conditions
  • Typical emergency management clinical environment with frequent standing and walking.
  • Work may be subject to interruptions.
  • Risk of occupational exposure to blood and other potentially infectious, electrical, and radiation hazards.
  • Exposure to inclement weather conditions and hazardous traffic conditions.
  • Works with protected health information.
  • Ability to work any shift, occasional extended hours, holidays, and/or weekends based on the needs of the department.
  • Exposure to potentially violent situations.
Physical and Mental Activities, Tools, and Equipment
  • Standing, walking, stooping, bending, lifting, climbing, pushing, and pulling to provide patient care and to utilize patient care devices necessary to perform duties in a safe manner.
  • Use of computer and other standard office equipment.
  • Uses patient care tools and equipment as they relate to the area of emergency medicine.
  • Ability to handle highly emotional and highly stressful situations.
