About the Job

Sandy Spring Bank is currently seeking a seasoned Portfolio Manager III to join our team. As a key member of our commercial lending team, you will be responsible for underwriting and managing a substantial portfolio of business loans, both secured and unsecured.

Key Responsibilities
  • Underwrite and manage a portfolio of business loans, ensuring compliance with the Bank's credit policy and regulatory requirements.
  • Monitor lending relationships to detect any deteriorations and perform portfolio reviews to ensure asset quality and sufficient returns.
  • Prepare problem loan reports and underwrite for loan approvals for new loan requests and existing relationships.
  • Participate in calling on prospective and existing clients to support and grow the portfolio.
Major Job AccountabilitiesUnderwriting (35%)
  • Evaluate and recommend loan requests for approval, ensuring acceptable credit quality in the region's portfolio.
  • Handle underwriting on all new requests, renewals, and restructures of existing loans, performing financial analysis of borrowers and determining strengths and weaknesses.
  • Prepare MCLARs, Portfolio Reviews, and Watch List Reports with input from the CRM, collaborating with the Relationship Manager to obtain answers from clients and additional financial information needed to complete a loan package.
Portfolio Management (35%)
  • Identify problem assets and develop an action plan, collaborating with the Portfolio Administrator and Relationship Manager to manage delinquencies, financial statement, and documentation exceptions.
  • Monitor past due and coming due loans, maintaining Guideline/Policy exceptions within desired limits, and working with the Loan Tracking Administrator to ensure that requests for financial statement information are sent out in a timely fashion.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the loan rating system and properly grade loans.
Business Development (20%)
  • Broaden and deepen existing lending relationships, assisting the Relationship Manager to generate cross-sell opportunities, grow relationship profitability, achieve sales goals, and asset quality targets.
  • Assist the Relationship Manager in preparing for and calling on clients and prospects, negotiating loan terms and structure, and when enlisted by the Relationship Manager.
Loan Closing/Processing (10%)
  • Assist the Relationship Manager and Portfolio Administrator, when needed, to ensure all procedures are followed and due diligence is performed for loan renewals.
  • Determine if real estate is involved and type of property valuation report to be ordered, requesting the Portfolio Administrator to order if a fee has been collected.
  • Review externally prepared documents, acting as a backup in closing loans and witnessing borrower execution of documents, as needed.
Required Skills

The position requires a seasoned, professional level of knowledge and skill gained through broad experience in commercial banking combined with a thorough understanding of commercial banking concepts and practices.

  • In-depth knowledge of commercial underwriting guidelines and related regulations.
  • Ability to utilize standard PC-based software to prepare correspondence, reports, and other documents as needed.
  • Strong communication, analytical, and presentation skills to effectively work with clients to explain products and interpret policy.
  • Inter-personal skills to maintain positive rapport with internal contacts.
  • Strong organizational skills to prioritize multiple duties while attending to detail.
