Job Description

Job Summary:

The University Police Sergeant is a key member of the Fort Hays State University Public Safety team, responsible for supervising law enforcement staff and ensuring the safety and security of the campus community.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and direct law enforcement staff, including Police Officers and Security Officers, to ensure effective enforcement of laws, regulations, and university policies.
  • Organize and assign tasks for University Police Officers on patrol shifts, ensuring proper staffing and adequate coverage.
  • Review and evaluate officer performance, providing feedback and coaching to improve overall performance.
  • Collaborate with the University Police Chief and Lieutenant to develop and implement departmental policies and procedures.
  • Provide training and guidance to officers on law enforcement procedures, policies, and protocols.
  • Conduct investigations and gather evidence to support disciplinary actions or criminal charges.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with local law enforcement agencies and community organizations to enhance public safety and security.
  • Participate in emergency response and crisis management efforts, providing leadership and guidance as needed.

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; relevant college coursework or law enforcement experience preferred.
  • At least three years of law enforcement experience, with a focus on supervisory or leadership roles.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to operate a vehicle safely.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment, with strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion.
