Position Summary:

The Special Education Teacher at NBFA is expected to fully embrace and advocate for the academy's mission. This role involves providing developmentally appropriate, engaging instruction tailored to the content areas aligned with the teacher's certification, while fostering strong relationships with students to instill a passion for learning. The teacher will also maintain open communication with families, encouraging them to be advocates for their children's education. Compliance with all relevant educational laws and regulations is mandatory.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement instructional activities that create an engaging learning environment.
  • Identify and adapt instructional materials to cater to diverse student backgrounds, learning styles, and special needs.
  • Collaborate with fellow educators and intervention specialists to ensure students achieve their IEP objectives.
  • Utilize data-driven insights to guide instructional practices.
  • Prepare and submit timely, developmentally appropriate lesson plans for daily activities.
  • Foster a structured and positive classroom atmosphere that promotes critical thinking.
  • Maintain accurate and efficient record-keeping systems.
  • Communicate effectively with students and parents, both verbally and in writing.
  • Work with colleagues to enhance the overall instructional environment across the school.
  • Engage in school-wide data teams and Professional Learning Communities to share best practices and enhance school performance.
  • Ensure continuous and appropriate student growth in alignment with age, subject area, and program classification.
  • Establish and nurture respectful and cooperative relationships with students, parents, and staff.
  • Take responsibility for achieving school-wide student performance objectives.
  • Meet professional obligations through effective work habits, including punctuality and participation in meetings.
  • Exemplify professional and ethical standards in interactions with students, parents, colleagues, and leadership.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Current State of Connecticut Teacher Certification (051, 053, 065, 165, or 265).
  • Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, or Special Education; a Master's Degree is preferred.
  • A commitment to mastering the subject matter and openness to constructive feedback.
  • A willingness to provide constructive feedback to support colleagues.
  • Understanding that all responsibilities are subject to performance goals established by the Board and school.
  • A strong belief in the mission of NBFA and a dedication to positively influencing student outcomes.
  • Fluency in oral and written Spanish, French Creole, or Portuguese is encouraged.
