About the Role:

The University of Miami is seeking a highly skilled Environmental Health and Safety Specialist to join our team. As a key member of our Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) department, you will play a critical role in maintaining organizational compliance with environmental and health safety regulations.

Job Summary:

The EHS Specialist will assist in maintaining a comprehensive safety program for all units of the University of Miami, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements for healthcare, research, and teaching laboratories. This role will involve providing expert technical consultation, developing and implementing safety protocols, and conducting EHS evaluations and audits.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Oversee EHS programs, including Laser Safety, Biological Safety, and Haz Mat
  • Assist in procedures to safeguard employees and surrounding communities
  • Conduct comprehensive EHS evaluations and ensure control measures are in place
  • Deliver EHS education and training to University faculty, staff, and students
  • Perform EHS audits and inspections on scheduled intervals or as needed
  • Investigate accidents and assist with implementing corrective action plans
  • Participate in emergency response procedures and respond to incidents as necessary
  • Maintain continuing EHS education to stay abreast of developments in the field
Department Specific Functions:
  • Participate in odor complaint response and investigation
  • Use industrial hygiene monitoring tools to support occupational safety programs
  • Assist in the annual lab inspection program and reviews protocols for risk mitigation
  • Respond to occupational safety inquiries and conduct safety-related training
  • Test and calibrate safety equipment to ensure functionality
  • Maintain safety equipment calibration schedule
  • Respond to requests for mold evaluations and participate in incident response
  • Provide support to institutional committees, departments, and groups as necessary
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant experience
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form
  • Ability to recognize, analyze, and solve a variety of problems
  • Proficiency in computer software (i.e. Microsoft Office)
