Southeastern Orthopedic Center is in search of a PRN/as needed Operating Room Registered Nurse for our surgical team.

Position Overview:

As a vital member of our healthcare team, you will deliver exceptional nursing care to patients undergoing surgical procedures, adhering to established protocols and best practices.

Reporting Structure:

Directly reports to the Director of Surgical Services.

Supervisory Duties:

Oversees the activities of Surgical Technicians and Nursing Assistants.

Physical Requirements:

This role demands a full range of motion, including the ability to lift and transport patients, manual dexterity, and coordination. The position requires prolonged periods of standing and walking, with occasional lifting of supplies weighing up to 50 pounds. Effective communication with patients and their families is essential, along with the ability to manage stress effectively.

Work Environment:

Exposure to anesthetic agents, hazardous materials, and biological fluids is expected. The role may involve working under pressure and during irregular hours.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Conducts thorough pre-operative assessments and post-operative evaluations for diverse patient populations, documenting findings accurately.

2. Facilitates the Surgical Time Out process prior to incision.

3. Assists in establishing and maintaining a sterile environment throughout surgical procedures.

4. Functions as the circulator during surgeries, ensuring the availability of necessary sterile instruments and equipment.

5. Collaborates with the surgical team to perform accurate counts of surgical instruments and materials.

6. Prepares and manages medications for use in the sterile field.

7. Handles specimens collected during surgery, ensuring proper preparation for transport.

8. Maintains comprehensive records of nursing activities and medication administration in the surgical setting.

9. Communicates any concerns or issues to the surgical team promptly.

10. Executes technical nursing tasks in accordance with established guidelines, adapting techniques as necessary.

11. Provides education to patients and their families regarding procedures, medications, and discharge plans.

12. Monitors and identifies changes in patients' conditions, notifying appropriate personnel as needed.

13. Demonstrates proficiency in initiating and managing life support measures during emergencies.

14. Ensures the availability and proper management of medical and surgical supplies in the operating room.

15. Participates in required meetings and contributes to committee activities as assigned.

16. Upholds patient confidentiality at all times.

17. Acts as a mentor for new staff members as needed.

18. Responsible for the secure handling and documentation of controlled substances within the surgical department.

19. May perform duties as a scrub nurse if appropriately trained.

20. Undertakes additional responsibilities as directed by management.

Qualifications:

• Graduate from an accredited nursing program.
• Current Registered Nurse license.
• Valid CPR certification required.
• ACLS and PALS certifications preferred.
