Overview:

The Senior Controls Project Engineer will play a pivotal role in supporting the Drivetrain Controls Team at Proterra Inc. This position is essential for the development and validation of control systems for heavy-duty electric vehicles. A strong foundation in controls development, particularly with MATLAB and Simulink, is required.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop comprehensive control system requirements documentation based on supplier specifications, regulatory standards, and customer needs.
  • Design and implement software solutions using MATLAB/Simulink auto code generation tools.
  • Create and execute test and validation plans to ensure control systems meet both functional and performance standards.
  • Analyze data from field tests and simulations to enhance the robustness of control systems and devise innovative solutions to challenges.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration of electrical and mechanical systems with control strategies.
  • Engage with drivetrain component suppliers to uphold system-level specifications and provide validation support.
  • Develop thorough DFMEA and safety analysis documentation, recommending improvements for future functional safety and robustness.
  • Coordinate with the product validation team to confirm that products meet established system requirements.
  • Assist in resolving field incidents related to controls and integration.
  • Occasionally provide on-site support for product deployment and application-specific development.
  • Set up and conduct tests in the engineering lab, utilizing HIL, SIL, and component testing setups.
  • Utilize data acquisition methods and calibration tools such as Canalyzer, INCA, and others.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Computer, or Software Engineering is required; an advanced degree is a plus.
  • A minimum of four years of progressive experience in controls engineering within the industrial, automotive, or transportation sectors is preferred.
  • Familiarity with hybrid or electric vehicle drivetrain systems, including power electronics and battery systems, is advantageous.
  • Experience with software configuration management systems such as SVN or Git is beneficial.
  • Proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink is essential, with additional programming languages considered a plus.

Location: This position is based in Greenville, SC.

Travel Requirements: Minimal travel expected (0-10%).
