Position Overview:
The Senior Project Engineer will play a pivotal role in supporting the Drivetrain Controls Team at Proterra Inc. This position is focused on the development and validation of control systems for heavy-duty electric vehicles. A strong foundation in controls development using MATLAB and Simulink is essential.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop comprehensive control system requirement documentation by interpreting supplier specifications, regulatory standards, and customer needs.
- Design and implement software solutions utilizing MATLAB/Simulink auto code generation tools.
- Create and execute test and validation plans to ensure control systems meet both functional and performance criteria.
- Analyze data from field tests and simulations to enhance control system reliability and devise innovative solutions to existing challenges.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration of electrical and mechanical systems with control strategies.
- Engage with various drivetrain component suppliers to uphold system-level specifications and provide validation support.
- Develop thorough DFMEA and safety analysis documentation, recommending improvements for future functional safety and robustness.
- Work alongside the product validation team to ensure compliance with system requirements.
- Assist in resolving field incidents related to controls and integration.
- Occasionally provide on-site support for delivered products and application-specific developments.
- Set up and conduct tests in the engineering lab, utilizing HIL, SIL, and component test configurations.
- Utilize data acquisition methods and calibration tools effectively.

Candidate Profile:
The ideal candidate is a proactive team player with excellent communication skills, capable of adapting to the evolving needs of the company. Hands-on experience with automotive systems is crucial, along with the ability to learn new programming languages and configuration systems.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Computer, or Software Engineering is required.
- Advanced Engineering Degree is a plus.
- Four or more years of progressive experience in controls engineering within the industrial, automotive, or transportation sectors.
- Familiarity with hybrid or electric vehicle drivetrain systems, including power electronics and battery systems.
- Proficient in MATLAB/Simulink and experience with software configuration management systems.
Location: Greenville, SC
Travel Requirements: Minimal travel expected.
