Senior Engineer for Battery Manufacturing
2 months ago
At SpaceX, we are driven by the vision of a future where humanity ventures beyond Earth, exploring the cosmos. Our mission is to develop cutting-edge technologies that will enable human life on Mars.
Position: Senior Engineer for Battery Manufacturing
We are committed to designing, producing, and validating the most efficient, cost-effective, and safest batteries in the aerospace sector. We seek an individual who can provide vision, leadership, and execution as we transition from initial concepts to high-volume production.
This role is integrated within the Design Engineering team, emphasizing the crucial link between hardware design and manufacturing processes.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Lead the production ramp-up of new battery product lines, establishing strategic objectives and managing projects to fulfill program requirements.
2. Act as a hands-on engineering liaison between design and production teams, guiding hardware designs and manufacturing processes from concept through validation to full-scale production.
3. Develop and validate manufacturing processes, including process controls and in situ verifications. Specify necessary equipment, collaborate with suppliers, and demonstrate process capabilities.
4. Introduce automation and robotics where cost-effective and quality-enhancing.
5. Create engineering drawings for precision tooling and testing fixtures, collaborating across mechanical, thermal, and electrical interfaces.
6. Contribute to the establishment of SpaceX manufacturing standards.
7. Diagnose and resolve fabrication issues in prototype and production assemblies while adhering to tight production schedules. Engage in failure analysis to identify root causes and implement preventive measures.
8. Update and refine designs in response to manufacturing optimizations, parts obsolescence, and evolving system requirements.
As needed, participate in hardware validation, which may include developing vacuum chambers, thermal control systems, battery cycling equipment, and fatigue testing apparatus.
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical, mechanical, or manufacturing engineering.
- Over 5 years of professional experience in hardware development, production, or testing.
- Proven experience in tooling design within a manufacturing context.
- Experience in transitioning products from design to manufacturing as part of a collaborative team.
- Demonstrated ability to implement Design for Manufacture and Design for Test principles.
- Proficient in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing.
- Familiarity with 3D CAD modeling software (e.g., NX/Unigraphics, Solidworks, Catia).
Preferred Skills and Experience:
- Master’s degree in electrical, mechanical, manufacturing, or materials engineering.
Manufacturing Process Experience:
- Knowledge of epoxy bonding processes, including surface preparation and automated dispensing.
- Experience with resistance, ultrasonic, and laser welding techniques.
- Familiarity with vision recognition tools.
Automation Experience:
- Basic knowledge of Python and SQL databases.
- Experience with semi-automated manufacturing and data management, including robotics.
Battery Testing Experience:
- Experience with lithium-ion battery acceptance, qualification, and characterization testing methods.
- Familiarity with battery cycling equipment and data management.
Product Development Testing:
- Experience with vacuum chambers and thermal control systems.
- Knowledge of accelerated lifecycle testing methods and analysis, including thermal and mechanical testing.
- Familiarity with non-destructive testing techniques such as modal excitation, dye penetrant, acoustic microscopy, CT-scan, thermography, and eddy current inspection.
- Experience with failure analysis techniques, including metallographic cross-sectioning.
- Knowledge of material characterization methods including EDS, XRF, FTIR, DSC, DMA, and TGA.
Hardware Design:
- Proficiency in using NX/Unigraphics software.
- Ability to identify and analyze production process improvements for efficiency and quality.
- A hands-on engineer passionate about continuous improvement and creating top-tier hardware.
Demonstrated capability to solve complex problems independently or as part of a collaborative team, adhering to schedules.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential.
Experience in fast-paced, iterative design environments, particularly within consumer electronics, mobile devices, medical devices, aerospace, marine, or automotive sectors.
