Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and physically capable individual to join our team as a Truck Helper at The Salvation Army USA Southern Territory. This part-time position involves assisting in the collection and transportation of donations, as well as maintaining the vehicle in proper working order.

Key Responsibilities
  • Ride in a Salvation Army truck on a scheduled route to pick up donated items and assist in navigating the driver to destinations.
  • Inspect donated items to ensure they meet established policies and procedures, and explain these policies to customers.
  • Lift, carry, and/or haul donations into the truck, packing items in a manner that maximizes use of space and protects items from damage.
  • Prepare donation receipts for customers and ensure their accuracy and completeness.
  • Maintain a good relationship with donors to promote a favorable image of The Salvation Army.
  • Unload donations from the truck upon arrival at the warehouse and distribute items to their designated locations.
  • Load the truck with items to be taken to the dump and deliver appliances and furniture purchased by customers.
  • Perform routine maintenance of the truck, including checking fluid levels and coordinating repair work as needed.
Requirements
  • Knowledge of the assigned geographic area.
  • Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with co-workers.
  • Ability to work effectively with customers.
  • Ability to meet attendance requirements.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate in English.
  • Ability to read and follow a map and/or hand-written directions.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Ability to perform strenuous, heavy work involving the lifting and carrying of heavy objects.
  • Ability to perform continuous walking, stooping, standing, and some climbing.
  • Work requires riding in a vehicle daily with exposure to the outdoors and physical discomforts associated with changes in weather.
