Job Overview:

The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) & Risk Management (RM) Specialist plays a pivotal role in supporting the leadership team and fostering EHS excellence within the organization. This position is dedicated to ensuring compliance with EHS regulations and facilitating the implementation of robust EHS and RM programs, practices, and strategies to enhance performance. The primary focus is to cultivate a culture of safety and effectively manage risks associated with workplace health and environmental factors.

This role will report directly to the Senior Manager of EHS & RM, who in turn reports to the Divisional EHS & RM Director.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide strategic guidance and oversight in alignment with Corporate EHS & Risk Management for environmental, occupational health, safety, industrial hygiene, occupational medical, and security matters.
  • Ensure adherence to multidisciplinary EHS programs and compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, driving continuous improvement and fostering an incident-free work environment.
  • Assist in addressing safety-related regulatory compliance issues and contribute to the development and implementation of company and divisional safety policies and standards.
  • Support the analysis, preparation, and maintenance of mandatory safety and environmental reports through the EHS & RM Data Management System.
  • Lead cross-functional teams to tackle EHS and security challenges, formulating strategic proposals and advising site leadership on impacts and mitigation strategies.
  • Implement a systematic incident investigation approach to ensure thorough investigations and identification of root causes.
  • Collaborate with the Site Leadership Team, supervisors, and employees to promote a culture aimed at achieving zero incidents related to environmental and employee health and safety.
  • Ensure timely and accurate submission of regulatory and internal reports, monitoring site metrics and implementing programs to address adverse trends.
  • Act as the EHS liaison for relevant regulatory agencies and internal organizations, fostering cross-functional relationships.
  • Participate in the EHS & Risk Management network, representing the site to develop and implement consistent EHS programs across the organization.
  • Maintain the Plant Safety Data Sheet (SDS) Program and update Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) records.
  • Support Workers' Compensation loss control initiatives and related reporting requirements.
  • Oversee Lock Out/Tagout (LOTO) procedures for all machinery across the plant.
  • Assist in ensuring injured employees receive timely medical care by accompanying them to medical provider visits.
  • Engage in divisional safety and environmental meetings and coordinate the Plant Safety Committee.
  • Support the development and enforcement of Environmental, Health, and Safety policies and practices.
  • Update and test LOTO procedures on all equipment annually.
  • Ensure all First Aid supplies are adequately stocked and maintain compliance of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs).
  • Facilitate safety orientations for new hires and manage the Near Miss Program.
  • Assist with internal and external environmental audits and conduct investigations for all reported injuries.
  • Utilize Data Management Software for logging audits, task completion, and injury records.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Participate in safety orientations for new employees.
  • Administer the plant hearing conservation program and conduct annual audiometric testing.
  • Conduct industrial hygiene monitoring and maintain equipment.
  • Support plant EHS audits and provide coaching and mentoring for new EHS & RM leaders.
  • Serve as a Subject Matter Expert for EHS programs, assisting EHS leaders with compliance.
  • Provide training on EHS & RM tools and lead Lock Out/Tagout activities.
  • Facilitate best practice sharing between sites and lead roundtable discussions with EHS leaders.
  • Conduct site visits as needed to assist with program implementation and hazard mitigation.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum education: Bachelor’s degree in a scientific, engineering, or technical discipline.
  • 5+ years of relevant experience in EHS and RM.
  • Expertise in OSHA/EPA regulations and standards.
  • Strong leadership, strategic planning, and auditing skills.
  • Proficient in environmental management information systems (EMIS) and support software.
