POSITION SUMMARY:

The School Bus Operator is responsible for the safe transportation of children to and from their homes and educational facilities, adhering strictly to all traffic regulations. This role includes the upkeep and cleanliness of the Agency vehicle, as well as enforcing safety protocols. The operator may also assist with communication between the center and parents.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Adheres to Agency protocols for transporting young children; follows the center's schedule; complies with relevant state and Head Start policies; manages emergency situations in accordance with established guidelines and program standards.
  2. Completes necessary administrative and program-related documentation.
  3. Ensures the bus is in optimal working condition; oversees state inspections; utilizes daily logs to document vehicle status, expenses, and maintenance; submits reports to the supervisor weekly.
  4. Facilitates communication between staff and parents; delivers and collects important documents from parents; maintains confidential contact records.
  5. Maintains cleanliness and safety of the center as needed; follows a daily maintenance checklist to ensure a safe environment; ensures all equipment is in safe working order.
  6. Involved in the recruitment, training, supervision, and evaluation of staff; manages performance reviews for direct reports; addresses staff conflicts; provides guidance on performance issues; assesses and orders necessary program supplies.
NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Performs additional tasks as assigned.
Requirements

Experience and Skill Requirements:
  • 1-2 years of experience in child transportation within public or school settings.
  • Experience working with young children.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Preferred experience operating a school bus with a capacity of 20 passengers or more, and weighing over 26,000 lbs.
Skills:
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and relevant software.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with young children.
  • Experience working with diverse populations.
  • Capable of reading, analyzing, and applying written procedures.
  • Ability to manage frequent disruptions.
  • Recognizes vehicle maintenance issues.
Education and Knowledge Requirements:
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of general vehicle maintenance and repairs.
  • First Aid and CPR Certification.
  • Familiarity with Child Care License regulations.
  • Understanding of Head Start Performance Standards.
Other Requirements:
  • Flexibility in scheduling.
  • Must pass background checks.
  • Must hold a valid C.H.R.C.
  • Minimum age of 21 years.
  • Possession of a valid Maine Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with PS endorsements, a clean driving record, reliable transportation, proof of insurance, and eligibility under Agency policy.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The physical demands of this position require the ability to use hands for handling and communication. Regular walking, sitting, and reaching are necessary, with occasional standing, climbing, or balancing. The role may involve lifting and carrying up to 70 lbs. Vision requirements include close, distance, and peripheral vision, with the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

This position is primarily conducted within a school bus environment, where noise levels can be high. The operator may need to manage emergency evacuations and handle hazardous materials. Exposure to various weather conditions is frequent.
