POSITION SUMMARY:
The Bus Driver operates a school bus to safely transport children to and from home and center, obeying all traffic laws. Cleans and maintains Agency vehicle; enforces all safety policies and procedures. Performs interior/exterior maintenance and repairs or custodial duties at the center when necessary. Assists with communication between center and parents.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Follows Agency guidelines for transporting infants, toddlers, and preschool children; adheres to center schedule; follows appropriate state and Head Start policies and procedures; deals with emergency situations according to established protocol and in a manner consistent with program performance standards.
- Completes required administrative and programmatic forms.
- Ensures that bus is maintained in good working order; ensures that state inspections are completed: use daily logs to record vehicle condition at beginning and end of day, expenses and maintenance; submit to supervisor on a weekly basis.
- Relays messages between staff and parents; delivers and pick up necessary paperwork from parents; documents all parent contacts on confidential contact sheets.
- Cleans and maintains center when necessary to ensure safe environments; follows daily maintenance checklist (e.g. bathroom, kitchen, facility safety list, to record maintenance and cleaning); keeps equipment in safe working condition.
- Interviews, hires, trains, supervises and evaluates staff. Maintains and complies with performance review system for direct reports; mediates staff conflicts; counsels employees with performance issues; recommends disciplinary action as necessary; assesses program equipment and supplies and orders and may distribute to staff and sites as needed.
NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Experience and Skill Requirements: The following experience and skill requirements are considered essential:
Experience:
- 1-2 years of experience transporting children in public/school transportation
- Working with young children
- Supervisory experience
- Operating school bus weighing above 26,000 lbs., 20 passengers or above, preferred
Skills:
- Use Microsoft Office applications and other computer software as applicable to the position
- Communicate with and relate to young children
- Work with a diverse population
- Read, analyze, comprehend, and apply written procedures
- Ability to handle frequent disruptions
- Recognize signs of problems with vehicles
Education and Knowledge Requirements: The following education and knowledge requirements are considered essential:
- High School diploma or equivalent
- General vehicle maintenance and repairs
- First Aid and CPR Certification
- Child Care License regulations
- Head Start Performance Standards
Other Requirements: Additional requirements that are considered essential:
- Ability to work a flexible schedule
- Must pass required background checks
- Must hold C.H.R.C
- Must be 21 years of age
- Must possess a valid Maine Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with PS endorsements, an acceptable driving record per the program, have reliable transportation, provide proof of insurance, and must be insurable under Agency policy

Work is performed in a school bus. The noise level is usually high. Potentially may evacuate children in emergency situations. May work with some hazardous materials such as bleach.
