POSITION SUMMARY:

The School Bus Operator is responsible for the safe transportation of children to and from their homes and educational facilities, adhering strictly to all traffic regulations. This role includes maintaining the cleanliness and functionality of the Agency's vehicle and enforcing safety protocols. Additionally, the operator may perform maintenance tasks and assist with communication between the educational center and parents.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Adheres to Agency policies for the transportation of young children, ensuring compliance with state regulations and Head Start guidelines; manages emergency situations according to established protocols and performance standards.
  2. Completes necessary administrative and program-related documentation.
  3. Maintains the bus in optimal working condition; ensures completion of state inspections; utilizes daily logs to track vehicle status, expenses, and maintenance, submitting reports to the supervisor weekly.
  4. Facilitates communication between staff and parents; collects and delivers essential paperwork; documents all parent interactions confidentially.
  5. Ensures the center is clean and safe by following a daily maintenance checklist, including areas such as bathrooms and kitchens; keeps all equipment in safe working order.
  6. Oversees the hiring, training, and evaluation of staff; manages performance reviews; addresses staff conflicts; provides guidance on performance issues; assesses and orders necessary program supplies.
NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Performs additional tasks as assigned.
Requirements

Experience and Skill Requirements:
Experience:
  • 1-2 years of experience in child transportation within public or school settings.
  • Experience working with young children.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Preferred experience operating a school bus with a capacity of 20 passengers or more, and weighing over 26,000 lbs.
Skills:
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and relevant software applications.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with young children.
  • Experience working with diverse populations.
  • Strong reading and comprehension skills for written procedures.
  • Capability to manage frequent disruptions.
  • Adept at recognizing vehicle issues.
Education and Knowledge Requirements:
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of general vehicle maintenance and repair.
  • First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Understanding of Child Care License regulations.
  • Familiarity with Head Start Performance Standards.
Other Requirements:
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule.
  • Must pass background checks.
  • Must hold a C.H.R.C.
  • Minimum age of 21 years.
  • Must possess a valid Maine Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with PS endorsements and maintain an acceptable driving record.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The physical demands of this position require the ability to use hands for handling and communication, as well as frequent walking, sitting, and reaching. Occasional standing, climbing, and balancing may be necessary, along with the ability to lift and carry up to 70 lbs. Vision requirements include close, distance, and peripheral vision, with the ability to adjust focus as needed.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

This role is primarily performed in a school bus environment, which may involve high noise levels and potential emergency situations requiring the evacuation of children. There may be exposure to hazardous materials and outside weather conditions.
