About the Role

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Water Treatment Operator Trainee to join our team at American Water. As a key member of our operations team, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safe and reliable delivery of water and wastewater services to our customers.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform routine checks on the condition of the water plant, including reviewing logs and notes, to ensure optimal performance.
  • Assist in the analysis of water treatment processes to ensure water quality meets regulatory standards.
  • Make adjustments as necessary to maintain water quality, pressures, and adequate quantities of water.
  • Calibrate instruments and equipment, perform routine laboratory tests, and document results.
  • Backwash filters to ensure proper filtration and remove trapped particulates.
  • Assist in performing preventive and emergency maintenance on equipment.
  • Perform various routine duties, including building/grounds maintenance, janitorial, and preventative maintenance.
  • Read and record meters, gauges, and control devices.
  • Record data and activities during work shifts on shift log sheets, logbooks, and computers.
  • Operate motors, pumps, valves, generators, and specialized equipment and machinery.
  • Collect samples from designated points, perform physical and chemical tests, and record results.
  • Operate heavy and light equipment, forklift, pallet jacks, overhead hoist, and mowing equipment.
  • Clean out settling basins, hydrotreators, filters, and wash water holding tanks as needed.
Requirements
  • Basic knowledge of wastewater or water distribution, pumping, collection, and treatment principles and safety practices.
  • Basic understanding of mechanical, chemical, and biological processes and related equipment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • 2-year or 4-year post-secondary education.
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • 0-2 years of experience in the water industry.
Work Environment
  • Regular exposure to outdoor weather conditions.
  • Potential exposure to water, wastewater, chemicals, loud noises, toxic fumes, oils, lubricants, dust, pollen, and mechanical equipment.
  • Frequent standing, stooping, walking, sitting, and climbing.
  • Lifting up to 55 pounds and performing other similar actions during the work shift.
