Position Overview:

The Veterinary Patient Care Specialist serves as a vital link among all departments within the Veterinary Hospital, collaborating closely with veterinarians to enhance patient care.

This role involves assisting veterinarians with client interactions, examinations, initial diagnostics, and obtaining necessary approvals, while also ensuring that medical records are updated accurately and that proper orders and charges are recorded in treatment sheets.

Additionally, the Specialist utilizes their technical skills to support the veterinarian in evaluating patients, conducting workups, administering treatments, and managing admissions and procedures.

The Specialist will also play a key role in onboarding new veterinarians, integrating relief veterinarians, and fostering effective communication to optimize client volume and the quality of patient care.

Our Patient Care Specialists enjoy direct oversight and management of cases alongside our Emergency Clinicians. They work independently and apply critical thinking skills. We are committed to fostering a learning environment where our specialists receive support to pursue credentials and specialty certifications.

Responsibilities & Expectations:
  • Foster a positive work atmosphere and maintain composure under pressure.
  • Exhibit respect towards clients and colleagues while delivering exceptional customer service.
  • Utilize appropriate medical terminology.
  • Ensure a clean and safe working environment.
  • Manage inventory and notify the inventory manager as necessary.
  • Provide patient restraint and effectively gather patient histories from owners.
  • Accurately measure and document patient vital signs.
  • Understand and uphold aseptic techniques and sterility when required.
  • Feed and walk animals as needed.
  • Maintain a well-stocked workspace.
  • Perform phlebotomy, place intravenous catheters, conduct in-house laboratory tests, prepare samples for external laboratories, and monitor anesthesia and sedation.
  • Conduct arterial blood draws and place arterial and urinary catheters, as well as nasogastric and central lines.
  • Possess knowledge of medical mathematics and the ability to convert and gather medications.
  • Administer medications (IV, IM, SQ, PO) and accurately prepare them.
  • Participate in patient rounds.

Schedule: Options for 3/12-hour or 4/10-hour shifts, with both day and night shifts available.

Education & Experience: High school diploma or equivalent (required).

  • Minimum of 4 years of experience as a Veterinary Technician.

RVT, LVT, or CVT credentials are preferred but not mandatory.
