Position Title: Building Engineer

Work Schedule: Tuesday – Saturday, 9AM – 5:30PM

Compensation: Hourly rate commensurate with experience

Job Overview: The Building Engineer is responsible for the operation, repair, and maintenance of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems within government facilities. This role requires physical stamina to handle heavy equipment and work in diverse environmental conditions. The engineer will respond to service requests, manage emergency situations, and ensure that all preventive maintenance tasks are executed effectively. The role also involves overseeing utility mechanics and contractors to ensure compliance with safety and operational standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage the operation, repair, and maintenance of mechanical and electrical systems, including HVAC units, pumps, and control systems. Complete preventive maintenance and on-demand work orders as assigned.
  • Conduct regular inspections to ensure that maintenance procedures are followed correctly.
  • Oversee the tool inventory, ensuring all equipment is maintained and available for use.
  • Implement and monitor water treatment programs for all systems.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization in engineering areas and storage facilities.
  • Ensure compliance with safety protocols, including lockout/tagout procedures and hazardous material handling.
  • Provide excellent customer service to staff, tenants, and vendors.
  • Familiarize with critical building access points and utility shutoffs.
  • Perform routine maintenance tasks, including filter changes and lubrication.
  • Conduct plumbing repairs and maintenance on fixtures and piping systems.
  • Communicate effectively with facility management and stakeholders regarding operational issues.
  • Operate and maintain Building Automation Systems (BAS).
  • Maintain accurate records in the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • Supervise work performed by external contractors.
  • Order necessary materials for repairs and maintenance tasks.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • A minimum of five years of experience in HVAC or facilities engineering, with relevant certifications.
  • Certification in applicable mechanical trades such as HVAC, Electrical, or Plumbing.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to interact with diverse groups.
  • Proficient in reading and interpreting technical drawings and diagrams.
  • Experience in repairing building systems, including electrical and plumbing.
  • Basic carpentry skills are a plus.
  • Knowledge of building safety systems and emergency protocols.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting and climbing.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to perform all maintenance tasks on-site, including lifting heavy objects and working in various environmental conditions.

Work Environment:

  • Work primarily takes place in mechanical rooms and on rooftops.
  • Exposure to noise, heat, and cold is expected.
  • Some tasks may require confined space entry.
