Job Summary

The Diagnostic Medical Sonographer II is a critical member of our healthcare team, responsible for performing a variety of specialized medical ultrasound examinations and procedures to obtain high-quality images for diagnostic interpretation.

Key Responsibilities
  • Review patients' charts and results from previous ultrasound examinations or other diagnostic studies, recording patients' personal and medical information.
  • Explain ultrasound procedures to patients to alleviate apprehensions and elicit cooperation.
  • Perform diagnostic procedures by adjusting, manipulating, and controlling complex ultrasound equipment and accessories.
  • Consult with radiologists and experienced associates to determine the need for additional images for comprehensive interpretation.
  • Take initiative to improve overall staff education through in-services, article distributions, and one-on-one training sessions.
  • Adapt to schedule changes and location changes while maintaining congenial relationships with all staff at all locations.
  • Demonstrate ability to schedule examinations and perform related clerical duties such as answering telephones and locating prior imaging and reports.
  • Maintain registry by obtaining necessary continuing education credits.
  • Practice sterile, isolation, and aseptic techniques to prevent contamination.
  • Maintain good rapport and cooperative relationships, approaching conflict in a constructive manner.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of information acquired pertaining to patients, physicians, employees, and visitors to St. Joseph Mercy Health System.
  • Assume responsibility for performance of job duties in the safest possible manner to assure personal and coworker's safety.
Requirements
  • Completion of an accredited Medical Sonography program.
  • Registered by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) with a minimum of one certification or registry-eligible with certification within one year of date of hire.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • One year as a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer preferred.
  • Must have in-depth knowledge of cross-sectional anatomy.
  • Must have the ability to produce and evaluate quality images.
  • Must be a very conscientious and detail-oriented person with excellent communication skills and demonstrate excellent customer service skills to deal effectively with patients and various levels of hospital personnel, outside customers, and community groups.
