Job Overview

GENERAL OBJECTIVE:

The role involves engaging in both academic and physical training activities aimed at obtaining TCOLE certification and successfully completing an accredited police training program.


SUPERVISION:

This position operates under the direct oversight of a Police Lieutenant.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Understand and follow lesson plans, presentations, and lectures in a classroom setting.

- Exhibit proficiency through written assessments and practical exercises.

- Successfully complete training and obtain certifications in the use of ASP baton, firearms, emergency vehicle operations, and personal defense spray.

- Maintain communication availability for emergencies and complete various assignments as required.

- Uphold a state of physical readiness in accordance with departmental standards.

- Attend classes, training sessions, and practical labs, and ensure the cleanliness and maintenance of departmental equipment and facilities.

- Carry out additional duties as assigned.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

- Must be at least 20 years old and reach 21 years by the time of commission.

- Possession of a valid Texas driver's license without any suspension or revocation record.

- No felony convictions or offenses involving family violence; no convictions above a class C misdemeanor in the last ten years.

- Must be a U.S. citizen and able to read and write in English.

- Must demonstrate good moral character and maintain industrious habits.

- Must be mentally and physically fit, meeting city and department response time requirements.

- High school diploma or G.E.D. with at least 12 college credit hours or two years of active military service with honorable discharge.

- Visual acuity must be at least 20/200 uncorrected in each eye, correctable to 20/30.


SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

- Knowledge of contemporary law enforcement principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment.

- Ability to learn applicable laws, ordinances, and departmental regulations.

- Proficiency in practical exercises and firearms handling.

- Capability to perform physical tasks necessary for police duties and meet established physical readiness standards.

- Effective oral and written communication skills.

- Familiarity with modern office equipment and software.

- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and supervisors.

- Sound judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions.

- Commitment to confidentiality and adherence to instructions.

- Familiarity with the geographical layout of the city.


SELECTION PROCESS:

The selection process includes a formal application, review of qualifications, testing (written and physical), oral interviews, background checks, polygraph examination, medical examination with drug screening, psychological evaluation, and completion of field training.


WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The work environment includes frequent outdoor conditions, occasional exposure to mechanical parts, and potential hazards. Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities.
