Key Responsibilities
  • Interpret blueprints and schematics, taking precise measurements to plan layouts and procedures.
  • Select the appropriate welding equipment or techniques based on project specifications.
  • Prepare components for welding in accordance with defined specifications (e.g., cutting materials with powered saws to meet measurements).
  • Utilize grinders to ready parts for welding.
  • Align components using measuring tools such as calipers and rulers, and secure pieces with clamps.
  • Execute welding operations using manual or semi-automatic welding equipment in various orientations (vertical, horizontal, or overhead).
  • Repair machinery and other components by welding pieces together and filling voids.
  • Inspect and test welded surfaces and structures to identify any defects.
  • Maintain equipment in a safe and operational condition.
  • May be assigned to assist in other areas as workload requires.
  • Perform additional duties as directed by the supervisor.
Required Skills
  • Demonstrated experience as a welder.
  • Familiarity with various welding techniques and equipment (TIG, MIG, Arc welding, etc.).
  • Proficient in using both electrical and manual tools (saws, squares, calipers, etc.).
  • Ability to read and interpret technical documents and drawings.
  • Understanding of safety standards and a commitment to using protective gear (face shield, gloves, etc.).
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Proficient in English.
  • Completion of a relevant apprenticeship program is advantageous.
  • Possession of a professional certification (e.g., AWS welding certificate) is a plus.
Supervision

No direct reports. This position operates independently within established guidelines, with occasional close supervision for specific tasks.

Leadership

Leadership skills are essential. May assist in training other welders and new or transferred staff.

Communication Skills

Must be able to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, regarding work requirements, progress, and any discrepancies. Interaction with customers, colleagues, and management is necessary, requiring professionalism and a positive demeanor.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to perform basic mathematical operations, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, and to work with fractions, decimals, or percentages.

Reasoning Skills

Must be able to follow detailed instructions and maintain focus for extended periods. Requires logical thinking to resolve issues and follow established procedures.

Physical Requirements

Must be capable of lifting up to 75 lbs with assistance (60% of the time), twisting and bending (100% of the time), and standing or sitting for prolonged periods (100% of the time). Pushing and pulling may be required (60% of the time), with occasional stair climbing (5% of the time). Wearing welding gear is necessary (95% of the time).

Work Environment

Manufacturing plant setting. Safety glasses and steel-toed boots are mandatory. Protective clothing, including welding helmets, gloves, and leathers, is required during welding operations. Exposure to typical manufacturing hazards is expected.
