Overview

The Patient Dining Associate plays a crucial role in facilitating communication between nursing units and the Food Service Department regarding patient meal preferences, dietary modifications, and overall patient dining experiences. This position involves reading and explaining patient menus to individuals twice daily, ensuring that selections adhere to prescribed dietary restrictions. The associate is responsible for organizing and managing diet orders efficiently, while also compiling special requests for menu adjustments. A strong understanding of dietary restrictions related to modified diets is essential to guarantee optimal patient care and satisfaction. The role requires prompt and accurate responses to any changes to maintain operational efficiency. Additionally, the associate assembles meal trays and delivers them to patient rooms and nursing units, and may occasionally prepare salads, desserts, beverages, and other food items as needed.

Responsibilities

Patient Care Activities

  • Assess age-specific safety considerations related to food for adolescent, adult, and geriatric populations.
  • Utilize effective communication skills to interpret responses from patients across different age groups.
  • Comply with hospital policies and procedures regarding universal precautions and patient isolation protocols.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of modified diets, appropriate condiments, and dietary restrictions as outlined by clinical staff.
  • Adjust patient menus according to dietary prescriptions while respecting cultural, ethnic, and religious preferences.
  • Report any patient-related concerns to the appropriate personnel promptly.
  • Execute all diet office functions accurately and within designated timeframes.
  • Gather patient census data, tally menus, and calculate food quantities necessary for tray service.
  • Take telephone messages and relay pertinent information to the appropriate individuals.

Non-Patient Care Activities

  • Ensure office equipment is maintained in good working order by notifying maintenance of any required repairs.
  • Adhere to sanitation procedures set forth by the Board of Health and maintain a clean working environment in all departmental areas.
  • Properly identify and utilize cleaning chemicals in accordance with manufacturer recommendations and safety data sheets.
  • Maintain an accurate inventory of necessary supplies to support efficient Food Service operations.
  • Follow the medical center's dress code at all times.

Qualifications

REQUIRED

  • A minimum of six (6) months of experience in customer service or food service.
  • Demonstrated understanding of common dietary modifications.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations effectively.
  • Current BLS certification (CPR) is required; training will be provided upon hire.

PREFERRED

  • Six (6) months to one (1) year of experience in healthcare food service or two (2) years of experience in food service.

Work Hours: 6am-7pm
