Position Summary

The Clinical Medical Physicist embodies the mission, vision, and values of Northwestern Memorial Healthcare, adhering to our Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program while complying with all relevant policies and standards.

This role involves providing daily clinical services under the guidance of the Director of Medical Physics, ensuring timely, safe, and precise patient treatment. The responsibilities of the physics section are categorized into eight primary areas:

  1. Machine quality assurance and calibration
  2. Treatment planning systems and development of treatment plans
  3. Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT)
  4. Gamma knife and Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS)
  5. Magnetic Resonance Linear Accelerator (MR-Linac)
  6. Brachytherapy (including prostate seed implants, eye plaques, and High Dose Rate (HDR) treatments)
  7. Total Body Irradiation (TBI) and Total Skin Electron Therapy (TSET)
  8. Routine operational duties, including chart checks and troubleshooting.
Key Responsibilities
  • Proficiency in the majority of the aforementioned procedures is preferred, with a minimum of four required.
  • This position serves as the primary resource for technical aspects of hardware and software, collaborating with other sections to meet clinical needs.
  • Contributes to the development of immobilization devices and plans based on CT, MRI, and PET imaging, including fusion techniques.
  • Implements complex treatment plans and oversees treatment delivery, including but not limited to: 3D Conformal Radiation Therapy (3DCRT), Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT/VMAT), Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT), adaptive therapy, SRS, SBRT, and gating techniques.
  • Ensures that prescribed radiation treatment plans meet clinical standards for both external beam and brachytherapy patients.
  • Conducts and verifies treatment calculations using manual methods or independent dose calculation engines.
  • Evaluates in-vivo dosimetry using appropriate detectors (TLDs, diodes, MOSFETs, film, etc.) and documents results.
  • Develops and accurately documents new procedures and protocols to ensure quality care and patient safety.
  • Performs and records quality control and assurance processes (daily, monthly, and annually).
  • Conducts patient-specific quality assurance as necessary.
  • Assists with additional physics functions, including commissioning new equipment, developing new treatment techniques, and analyzing clinical trial data.
  • Adheres to all radiation safety policies and procedures, ensuring the safety of patients, visitors, and staff.
  • Maintains familiarity with local and national radiation safety and protection guidelines.
  • Complies with continuing education requirements of credentialing agencies to maintain competencies.
  • Provides clinical coverage outside of the primary facility as directed by the Director of Medical Physics.
  • Encouraged participation in clinical research and teaching programs, including mentoring therapy students and residents.
Qualifications

Required:

  • A Master's degree (MS) or Doctoral degree (PhD) in medical physics or an equivalent field, with 0-7 years of experience.
  • Licensure by the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA).
  • American Board of Radiology (ABR) certification or equivalent (Canadian) either completed or in progress, with a requirement to complete ABR certification within three years of employment.
  • Experience in clinical and developmental research projects, as well as teaching expertise.
  • For faculty appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, evaluation will be based on academic credentials.
  • Proficiency in computer programming and clinical physics-related software for patient care.
  • Strong communication skills, ensuring effective collaboration with all teams in radiation oncology.

Preferred:

  • Extensive knowledge of radiation oncology software and computer systems.
  • Visibility through service, teaching, or clinical productivity.
