Nuclear Medicine Technologist Job Summary

This PRN or relief position performs diagnostic nuclear medicine exams under the direction of the Radiology Director and the technical direction of the Radiologist. The Nuclear Medicine Technologist is responsible for preparing, measuring, and administering radiopharmaceuticals in diagnostic and therapeutic studies. The role involves operating nuclear medicine equipment and performing nuclear medicine procedures to assist physicians in the diagnosis of disease.

Responsibilities:
  • Explains the process to patients and instructs and assists patients in assuming physical positions for examination to reduce anxiety and obtain patient cooperation.
  • Prepares stock solutions of radiopharmaceutical materials, calculates doses, and administers doses.
  • Calibrates equipment.
  • Performs diagnostic studies on patients as prescribed by physician, using scanners or scintillation cameras to detect radiation emitted and to produce images of organs.
  • Measures radioactivity, using Geiger counters, scalers, and scintillation detectors.
  • Administers therapeutic doses of radiopharmaceuticals.
  • Follows radiation safety techniques in the use and disposal of radioactive materials.
  • Operates the department computer system for scheduling and billing procedures.
  • Operates the PACS system to ensure all images are verified and sent.
  • Starts IVs and administers radioisotopes.
  • Works with patients of all ages to develop an understanding of their physical and emotional status.
  • Recognizes symptoms and signs of reactions and implements appropriate intervention.
  • Assists in cross-training/teaching other department personnel and/or students.
  • Maintains supply inventory.
  • Maintains records of use and disposal of all radioactive materials in keeping with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) standards.

Qualifications: Associate's degree or equivalent from an AMA-approved Nuclear Medicine school. Previous experience in the field is desirable. Holds or is eligible for certification by the ARRT in Nuclear Medicine. CNMT or RT(N). Mandatory Basic and Advanced Life Support Training per policy.
