Waco, Texas, United States Texas Department of Aging & Disability Services Full time
Job Overview:

Candidates must be at least 21 years old to qualify for a position in direct care at the Texas Department of Aging & Disability Services.

This role is available across various shifts, including 1st, 2nd, and 3rd shifts on multiple units.

Additional compensation may be available for evening, night, and weekend shifts.

Are you looking to grow both personally and professionally while making a meaningful difference in the lives of others? Do you value teamwork, dependability, and inclusivity? Our organization is committed to fostering a diverse and supportive community where employees feel appreciated and empowered while delivering specialized care to those in need.

The Texas Department of Aging & Disability Services operates numerous facilities dedicated to providing high-quality mental health care.

Our facilities are recognized for excellence in forensic mental health and complex psychiatric care, with all locations accredited by relevant health authorities.

If you are passionate about offering compassionate, innovative, and individualized care, we invite you to consider the following position.

The Psychiatric Nursing Assistant II (PNA II) engages in moderately complex rehabilitative patient care services under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN), ensuring quality psychiatric nursing care in an inpatient environment.

Responsibilities include providing emergency, health, and personal care services to patients; observing, documenting, and reporting patient conditions and behaviors in an electronic record; engaging with patients therapeutically; and participating in both individualized and unit-based programming.

The PNA II is primarily responsible for maintaining direct therapeutic interactions with patients to enhance their living and social skills, facilitating progress towards a less restrictive environment.

As a vital member of the recovery or admissions team, the PNA II contributes verbal and written documentation regarding individual patient behaviors, including progress towards their recovery goals.

Participates in shift reports and recovery team meetings. Performs delegated nursing tasks in accordance with competency. May provide guidance to PNA I staff. Operates under general supervision, with some latitude for initiative and independent judgment. The PNA II has no financial responsibilities but is accountable for assigned property.

It is important to understand that duties, work locations, and shift patterns may change as determined by administrative needs.

Must be aware that duties may involve exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials. This position grants access to a limited set of records in compliance with privacy regulations.

Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to actively participating in or supporting the agency's disaster response and/or recovery efforts.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Regular attendance is required, with the possibility of working specific or rotating shifts, extended hours, and/or overtime as per agency policy.
  • Utilize therapeutic communication skills to effectively engage patients in achieving their individual recovery objectives. If assigned to night shifts, maintain a calm and restful environment to support patient rest.
  • Provide supportive, age-appropriate care to patients as directed by the Registered Nurse (RN) and assist with daily living activities to promote independence.
  • Monitor patients and maintain observation to ensure the safety and health of all individuals. Escort patients to appointments as necessary.
  • Act as a liaison to the recovery or admissions team, maintaining ongoing communication regarding patient progress towards individualized goals.
  • Employ basic computer skills and documentation practices to convey patient care information clearly and promptly.
  • Assist licensed nurses in preparing patients for medication administration or treatment, including taking and monitoring vital signs.
  • Promote safety through continuous monitoring of the environment and active engagement with patients to prevent unsafe situations.
  • Facilitate programming offered on the unit or facility, co-facilitating groups as assigned.
  • Respond effectively to crisis situations using verbal de-escalation techniques and other interventions under RN supervision to ensure patient safety.
  • Perform CPR and use an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) according to established guidelines.
  • In the absence of higher-level PNAs, provide guidance to PNA I staff as needed.
  • Relay timely, clinically relevant patient information to the RN to enhance safety and care quality.
  • Serve as a preceptor for new employees and temporary staff on the unit.
  • Participate in unit and hospital committees as appointed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including participating in disaster response and recovery efforts as needed.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Understanding of patient care techniques and recovery programs.
  • Basic computer proficiency.
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills to interact effectively with team members.
  • Skill in taking vital signs.
  • Ability to read, write, and comprehend English for effective communication.
  • Capability to provide patient care, administer first aid, and conduct emergency interventions.
  • Ability to collaborate with others and accept supervision.
  • Capacity to train and guide others.
