Job Overview

DEPARTMENT: Anchorage Police Department (APD)
WORK HOURS: 40 hours per week; Shifts may vary

Key Responsibilities

Enforce all criminal and traffic regulations, including identifying and apprehending offenders. Carry out various crime prevention and enforcement tasks as assigned. Respond to calls for police assistance and intervene in diverse situations as necessary. Enforce traffic laws, manage traffic flow, investigate accidents, and compile detailed reports. Conduct preliminary investigations, gather and preserve evidence, maintain records, and prepare cases for court. Provide testimony in court as required and collaborate with other agencies as needed.

The responsibilities and requirements of a Police Officer include, but are not limited to, the following activities: operating firearms, driving emergency vehicles, handcuffing detainees, administering first aid, conducting rescue operations, lifting and carrying weights up to 70 lbs, directing traffic, subduing suspects, pursuing individuals, navigating various terrains, and maintaining physical fitness.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be a citizen or US National of the USA by the date of hire.
  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent required.
  • Must be at least 21 years old by the date of hire.
  • Must possess a valid State of Alaska driver's license by the date of hire.
  • Must meet standards set by the Alaska Police Standards Council (APSC) and Anchorage Police Department (APD) regarding criminal convictions, traffic violations, and controlled substances usage.

Additional Information

TESTING AND NOTIFICATION

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and have acceptable employment records may be invited to participate in the Police Officer Testing process. An APD Police Officer is a respected and highly sought-after position. Candidates should approach every step of the process as part of a professional job interview, maintaining a professional appearance and demeanor throughout.

Entry Testing Information:

All applicants must pass the entry-level Police test. The written test assesses various competencies relevant to the role. Applicants must achieve a minimum passing score to advance to the Physical Ability Test.

CONDITIONAL OFFER OF EMPLOYMENT - BACKGROUND PHASE

Applicants who successfully complete the Physical Ability Test will receive a Conditional Offer of Employment, contingent upon passing a series of evaluations including a background investigation, psychological assessment, and polygraph examination.

Selected candidates will be required to submit to a medical examination and drug screening as part of the final hiring process. All required licenses and certifications must remain current throughout employment.
