Physical Therapy Assistant at WVU Medicine

Position Overview: The Physical Therapy Assistant plays a crucial role in delivering prescribed rehabilitation services under the guidance of a licensed physical therapist.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Possession of current or temporary licensure in the state of West Virginia or relevant state licensure where services will be provided. Permanent licensure is required within 90 days of employment.
- Certification in Basic Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- A minimum of one year of experience in a relevant healthcare setting (acute care, outpatient, skilled nursing facility, home health).
Core Responsibilities: The following duties outline the essential functions of this role. Additional responsibilities may be assigned as necessary.
- Utilizes established research and effective methodologies to prevent or address conditions that hinder mobility and daily functioning, implementing care plans developed by the supervising physical therapist.
- As appropriate to the work environment, assesses and adjusts priorities for patient care activities based on individual needs and available resources, collaborating with nursing staff to enhance patient handling protocols.
- Educates patients and caregivers on treatment plans, safety precautions, and equipment usage, ensuring comprehension through demonstration and documentation.
- Maintains accurate records of all treatments in accordance with departmental standards, under the supervision of the primary physical therapist.
- Processes billing for services rendered, adhering to departmental guidelines and utilizing the electronic medical record system.
- Provides oversight for students and volunteers to ensure effective supervision and learning opportunities.

- Adheres to safety recommendations regarding patient lifting, with a maximum manual lift limit of 35 pounds. All patient transfers and repositioning should utilize appropriate equipment and techniques.
- Engages in physically demanding tasks, including lifting, moving, and standing for extended periods, often involving materials and equipment weighing over 40 pounds.
- Requires specific visual abilities, including close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
