Position Overview:

The Chief of Government Relations will engage with local, state, and federal legislative entities and governmental organizations to advocate for and promote the University of Idaho and the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS).

This role is pivotal in establishing connections that foster a robust network aimed at enhancing funding, advocacy, and support for scholarly, creative, and Extension activities from state and corporate sources, while elevating the profile of CALS.

Internally, this position collaborates closely with senior leadership within the college and university, as well as with University Research and Economic Development and government affairs personnel, college advancement, and agricultural research and extension colleagues statewide.

This role also acts as a liaison between CALS and industry associations, commodity groups, and organizations that represent CALS within the agricultural sector across Idaho.

The Chief of Government Relations is tasked with developing coherent messaging for key college initiatives and priorities, while operationalizing a network of alumni, faculty, staff, students, and other supporters of the college.

The diverse landscape of Idaho's agricultural and life sciences is reflected in the research and Extension programs conducted by the college.

The college addresses needs in agriculture, life sciences, natural resources, families, youth, and communities by integrating teaching, Extension, and research functions.

This position reports to the Dean of the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences and collaborates closely with University Government Relations.


Minimum Qualifications:
Five years of leadership and administrative experience in an organization with responsibilities for strategic planning, decision-making, and relationship management.
Experience in government relations or industry affairs.
Proven track record of achieving goals and objectives through leadership, fostering a positive climate and culture, effective communication, vision, and management.

Demonstrated experience in verbal and written communication, including electronic media, and coordinating with diverse groups such as faculty, industry representatives, and government officials.

Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

Required Education:

Bachelor's Degree in Government Affairs, Business Administration, Public Administration, Public Policy, Public Relations, Public Affairs, Political Science, Marketing, Communications, Law, Economics, or Agricultural and Life Science.


Additional Preferred Qualifications:
Advanced degree in a relevant field.
Experience in public relations and marketing.

Thorough understanding and commitment to the land-grant system and familiarity with the mission of the agricultural experiment station and UI Extension.

Experience working with a wide array of groups.
Broad knowledge across agricultural and life science disciplines.
Familiarity with the State of Idaho.
Demonstrated professional achievement and leadership.
