Job Overview

The Music Therapist is responsible for developing, organizing, and executing a comprehensive music therapy program aimed at assisting individuals experiencing emotional challenges. This role involves collaborating with the Manager of Activity Therapy to conduct sessions for designated groups, ensuring accurate patient documentation, and adhering to departmental policies. The Music Therapist will manage a designated caseload, observe patient behaviors, and demonstrate a genuine commitment to patient development while reporting any unusual occurrences to supervisory staff. Additional duties include staying updated on relevant procedures, participating in interdisciplinary team meetings, and mentoring students and volunteers. The Therapist is expected to show empathy and respect for the unique physical and psychological needs of patients across various age groups.

Key Responsibilities

1. PATIENT ENGAGEMENT

Applies the principles and methodologies of Music Therapy within a healthcare environment, utilizing expertise in music media, theory, and performance to deliver high-quality mental health services. Enhances the breadth and quality of Music Therapy offerings. Assesses patient needs and evaluates their functioning, taking into account their overall skills, deficits, and motivation levels. Completes assessments promptly and formulates effective care plans, adapting them as necessary to meet evolving patient requirements. Conducts specialized assessments as needed. Fosters therapeutic relationships with patients, ensuring care is delivered in a safe, comfortable, and respectful manner. Monitors patient progress and adapts therapeutic techniques to accommodate those who may struggle with verbal instructions or group activities. Develops tailored programs for patients with special needs. Maintains thorough documentation of patient responses to therapeutic interventions, progress towards treatment goals, and significant behaviors, ensuring compliance with departmental policies and healthcare standards.

2. TEAM COLLABORATION

Manages a designated caseload and conducts therapy sessions in a timely manner, adhering to Music Therapy protocols and collaborating with Activity Therapy as needed. Provides support during weekends, evenings, and holidays, demonstrating flexibility in response to scheduling changes. Cultivates effective working relationships by actively participating in treatment team meetings and contributing to departmental initiatives. Educates team members about Music Therapy practices and serves as a liaison between the Activity Therapy department and other units. Supervises students and peers in accordance with hospital and departmental policies, assisting other disciplines in the appropriate application of Activity Therapy services.

3. QUALITY ASSURANCE

Contributes to departmental and hospital performance improvement initiatives. Identifies and addresses opportunities for program enhancement in alignment with departmental and hospital objectives, staying informed about best practices and current trends in healthcare. Adheres to all departmental and hospital policies, including safety and quality standards. Submits timely safety reports and uses these as opportunities for process improvement. Meets all continuing education requirements and engages in professional development activities to enhance personal performance and contribute to the growth of staff and students.

4. RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

Ensures timely procurement of supplies and equipment necessary for therapy services, maintaining appropriate inventory levels. Educates patients and staff on the safe use and maintenance of therapy supplies and equipment, ensuring a clean and functional environment. Maintains organized leisure inventories as required for the patient population served. Performs additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

Education: Bachelor's Degree in Music Therapy

Licensure: Board Certified Registered Music Therapist or Eligible; BLS (Basic Life Support) Certification
