GENERAL PURPOSE
Under the general oversight of the Aquatics Director or Aquatic Center Coordinator, the Lifeguard is responsible for a range of poolside and water safety responsibilities to ensure the secure use of aquatic facilities. This role involves monitoring water activities to guarantee safety and prevent accidents or injuries among patrons, as well as enforcing facility rules and regulations.
SUPERVISION: None.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Act as a lifeguard; observe patron activities; enforce facility rules; manage patrons for rule violations; monitor patrons to prevent theft or misuse of facilities.
- Provide first aid as necessary to assist individuals with injuries; conduct water rescues to avert accidents and drowning incidents.
- Maintain constant vigilance and awareness of patron activities to minimize risks of incidents or accidents.
- Perform regular upkeep and maintenance of the facility; clean decks, walls, windows, pool equipment, locker rooms, and restrooms.
- Participate in maintaining daily records related to accidents, rescues, water temperature, and chemical testing; report unsafe conditions to supervisors.
- Assist in conducting water quality assessments; periodically collect water samples for testing chlorine and pH levels.
- Carry out related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Education and Experience: Sufficient education and training to demonstrate an aptitude for performing related duties; specialized training and certification (Red Cross) as a Lifeguard; AND six (6) months of general experience related to safe swimming or aquatics program participation is preferred; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Some knowledge of the rules and regulations governing aquatic facilities; water safety practices; First Aid and CPR; swimming instruction techniques. Ability to demonstrate advanced swimming skills; establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and the public; communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Special Qualifications: Must be at least 16 years of age. Must possess Red Cross certification as a lifeguard and be trained in First Aid/CPR.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The incumbent performs duties in a typical pool setting with a climate-controlled environment, characterized by high humidity and moisture levels. Tasks require a variety of physical activities, generally involving muscular strain, such as swimming, walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching, talking, hearing, and seeing. Common eye, hand, and finger dexterity is necessary. Mental application involves memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability, and critical thinking.
