Job Title: Biologist 1

Join the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) as a Biologist 1 and contribute to the protection and conservation of the state's natural resources.

Job Summary:

The Biologist 1 will work with the DEC's Region 8 team to coordinate and review Article 15 Protection of Water and Article 24 Wetland Protection programs. This includes reviewing regulatory permits, conducting field inspections, and preparing reports. The incumbent will also assist with freshwater mussel study and relocation plan review, and provide information on invasive species, threatened and endangered species, and species of special concern.

Responsibilities:
  • Review and comment on regulatory permits for Lake Ontario, the Finger Lakes, and protected streams throughout the Region.
  • Determine mean high-water levels using appropriate equipment and field observations.
  • Coordinate enforcement activities with the Division of Law Enforcement (Environmental Conservation Police) and the Office of General Council.
  • Conduct permit condition and/or enforcement compliance inspection.
  • Conduct wetland field inspections and prepare site or project specific reports.
  • Conduct wetland delineations and prepare wetland delineation reports.
  • Review wetland delineations submit for approval.
  • Coordinate site visits with applicants and/or the US Army Corps of Engineers.
  • Review permit applications for compliance with Article 24 and the associated regulations.
  • Coordinate enforcement activities with the Division of Law Enforcement (Environmental Conservation Police) and the Office of General Council.
  • Provide information on invasive species, threatened and endangered species, and species of special concern.
  • May provide direction and guidance to region 8 Fish and Wildlife Technicians and interns.
  • Assist with unit work planning and annual reporting.
Requirements:
